Hey,
I have a Acer Aspire 3610 and it works really well. (after turning the video card up in the bios). anyway, i wish to overclock it to get around 1.8 to 2 GHZ out of the cpu. unfortuntly this means more heat, im wanting to replace the fan with something faster. but after a fustraiting battle, i cant find out how to open it. i removed all the screws and pried the edges open but it wont budge. it would be awesome if someone could give me a step by step way to open it. some pictures would be cool too.

I have a problem with my Sony PCG v505BL notebook. I can not switch on my notebook, the power lamp on the notebook is not on. I thought the problem might be that the switch button is loose, or something wrong inside, but I don't know how to open the laptop, even when I remove all screws behind the laptop. Does anyone can help me? Many thanks in advance.

You should be posting this in the Sony forum, http://www.notebookforums.com/forum103.html This is the Acer side. But anyway, make sure you remove the battery, sometimes they hide some screws under that and under the hard drive.

yer... there might be some screws hiden... but remember that its a laptop. the top around the keypad should come off first ( there is a heap of clips around the edges) next should be the screen. once youve done that try the harddrive and cd drive. most laptops are built in sections and need a step by step. if you dont do it right it wont come apart. also when you take it apart you kill any worrenty you have. be carefull to not force it apart, the chipset may be connected to the case on the top and base. there is a few screws under the keypad too. i tryed with me aspire 3614 and i gave up. you are better to pay a pro to do it for you. also a mate of mine had the same problem, it ended up being a fryed prossesser.

The fan should only be held in by a total of three screws, one of those should be removed when you take off the casing, and then there should be two visible screws. If its getting the case off thats holding you back, then the top function panel should lift up from the sides and allow you to remove the LCD hinges. You will then find two screws just below where the bottom edge of the screen was that will allow the bottom casing to seperate.

Though having said that the post above is right, if your unsure and the laptop is of value to you then get someone else to work on it. Worst case if they break it they can replace it

Otherwise a no fear approach can work. Generally I found that laptops are more robust than I expected and that a bit of patience before you move any part and there isn't anything magical or complex about them. Just lots of very clever positioning on the designers part.

One issue I have notice on the Aspire & Travelmate machines is that the plastic housing for the screen hinge can break making it difficult to remove. Removing the screws below the screen allows you to flex the casing just enough to get to the broken screw housing in such scenarios.

Any way good luck.

How to access the bios to see the advanced features? What version are you using? I tried v1.09 and v1.13, nothing to play with. I just upgraded to Pentium M 740, the fan throttles between off, slow, fast speed depending on load. But after a few (20-30) cycles (not time dependent) it will not throttle to off (venting cold air), it will still do slow and fast. Same in battery mode. Reboot will not fix it. To fix, need power cycle, or hibernate/sleep follow by wakeup. I think maybe some bios setting, but bios is very basic.
