purchase a m1710 now or wait for the m1730?

Hi,

I am about to pull the gun on a new laptop..

I have 9300 modded with a 7800 gtx go.. but that card is showing its age already..

I am thinking about getting a m1710 w/ 7950 GTX, 2.0 Core2Duo, 200 gig 7200 HD, 2 GIG Ram for $2500 shipped..

Will I regret this since the m1730 is suppose to come out the 21st of Sept?

When the m1730 comes out.. this should push the price down a little more for the m1710 right?

thanks!

Dell didn't say anything about sept 21st, so I doubt it will be released on the 21st. But if you can wait, I would wait for the 1730, it has a option of extreme cpu, which will rock. I don't about the GPU though because dell hasn't officialy said anything about the gpu.

I would def wait, no sense in buying top of line when a whole new model is going to be released soon

Well I just sold my M1710 with the thought when the 8800 series or better GPUs come oput I would buy that then.

But the 8700 card that comming in the 1730 is not that great of a card compared to a 7950GTX.

As far as the 21st goes, there was a link posted last night that indicated Dell was going to relase it on the 21st.

You can picked some good deals with the M1710 used, or on the outlet. and it will be good for some time. Also with the CC warratny, you would likely get a M1730 replacement if the M1710 ever dies

how was the 7950 gtx on games?

i can't even play bioshock that well on the 7800 gtx.. MoH: Airborne demo was running pretty badly on it also..

will the 8800m be a big jump in improvement?

i see you have a nice Desktop --- so games are no problem

Search. It's there.

The 7950GTX can play any game no problem, even the 7900GS plays BF2142 with full settings.

The new 8700 will not even compare to the 7950GTX

That just made getting my 7900GTX, and ocing it to 7950GTX speeds even sweeter

Well I noticed a trend over time with Dell and the XPS line. They always seem to release the XPS and a few montha later they release a new version with upgraded video. They did it with the Gen2 / M170. 6800 Ultra to 7800GTX. The 1710 originally had the 7900GTX then they added the 7950GTX. Makes me think they will do the same thing with the 1730. Personally I would wait for the 1730 with whatever video upgrade it will get. Possibly the 8800 Go.

It will probably be 2008 sometime before we see a 8800 series mobile GPU

Well a couple of my friends have pretty nice gaming rigs... Desktops, Both 2.2 Dual Cores.

one machine with 8700 and one with the 8800.... For the price difference on the desktop, I would def get the 8800 it smokes the 8700... from what I've seen in person... I wonder if the m1730 will have an option for 2-8800... but I bet each card is going to cost 500 or so bucks.... Plus with the option for Extream CPU and SSD..... That brings the total of a new m1730 to about a gazillion dollars... Im going to need a third mortgage

Well, I'm kinda lost why anyone would consider the m1730. It's HUGE. 2" thick, 10lbs (w/o power brick)... I mean you're never gonna move around with it, so may as well get a desktop for less money that's easy to upgrade as time goes on. However the m1710 and newly-released precision m6300 are much more mobile while still packing a punch. They're probably the most mobile considering power/features.

I did hear release of m1730 was mid-september.

Although it's huge, it is still more movetable than desktop. I remember people were laughing at m1710 owners that carry 10lbs laptop around. I don't have money to buy 3+ gaming desktops, so i buy 1 gaming laptop, and I got a car. As long as there is a bag for it, and as long as it's smaller than a desktop + lcd, then it's still more mobile, and there is a huge market for it. It's not like we put it on our back and run for miles, it's 1 minute walk from my car to indoors.

I remember when the XPS Gen 1 came out... It was huge, but alot of peeps liked it. I loved it, it was big but awsome. I was playing at a tournee Unreal 2004, I was playing and some guys come in with their desktops ( Tower, monitor, speakers, keyboard, mouse, etc...) it was crazy. Notebook makes it easier

Plus who wouldnt want to show off a big ass notebook. When I go around with my M1710, everyone asks what it is.... Its a computer... I love the feeling of having something different than everyone... Thanks dell.....

Sounds comparable to the standard bio or ochem textbooks nowadays. No choice with those. I don't care about weight, it's what's inside that I care about. Besides, next to lugging spectrophotometers around campus or football equipment in high school, this laptop is nothing. I'd hardly notice I was carrying it.

the M1730 will be SLI 8700's
I saw some performance chart in a thread posted in here somewhere and honestly the 8700gt was only a couple notches behind the 7900GS so take that 8700gt X 2 I will bet it will be performing above a 7950GTX though not much more.
the 8800 go will come out but as previoously mentioned, probably not till well into 2008
