HP dv6449us Lag Problems

Thread Starter
Last night I purchased an Hp dv6449us from circuit city. I play world of warcraft so of course the first thing I do when I get home is install world of warcraft and start playing. I was extremely upset with the way this notebook is performing. My desktop has a P4 1.8ghz cpu, 1gb ram, and some low lvl nvidia card. I figured the laptop would run 10x better, but it doesn't appear so.

What should I do to try to improve performance?

I put the graphics on low and I am only getting an average of 13 fps. I believe this computer should be running way better. Here are the specs:

1.8 GHz AMD Turion ™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-56
Microprocessor Cache 512KB+512KB L2 Cache
Memory 2048 MB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
Memory Max 2048 MB max supported
Video Graphics NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 (UMA)
Video Memory Up to 559 MB (Shared)
Hard Drive 160 GB (5400 RPM) Hard Drive (SATA)
Multimedia Drive LightScribe Super Multi 8X DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support
Display 15.4" WXGA High-Definition Brightview Widescreen (1280 X 800)

Today when I get home from work I plan on updating all drivers. But other than that I don't really know what to do. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I've never had an HP, but if they're anything like the eMachines and Dell machines I've owned, you need to either reformat and cleanly install Windows, or remove the bloatware (all the crap apps pre-installed. Ex: Norton, AOL, etc).

Simply going to Control Panel and removing unwanted programs and then running CCleaner will probably help a lot. You can also stop unnecessary programs from running at startup, and stop unnecessary processes.

the 6150 is a weak video card. Most laptops sold at big electronic stores arent meant for gaming

Agreed. The Go 6150 is a very low end video card, and is not going to be up to the task of the 3D rendering needed for games like WOW. If you look at the performance numbers of that card here: http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-...50.2345.0.html You will see that is gets very low benchmark scores in 3Dmark05 (630). If I compare that to my DV8330, which has a Go 7600 card, it gets a much higher score (3400). I play Lord of the Rings Online consistently with my laptop. I usually have a lot of the eye candy turned down, and my frame rates are typically in the 25-35 fps range. HP makes some nice laptops, and you can still get many of the DV9000 and DV6000 series machines with the Go 7600 card in them. They are typically more pricey and they will usually have an Intel Processor as a result, but with the lack of ability to upgrade the vid card, it is usually necessary to spend the extra $$$ up front.
