Inspiron E1405 / 640m CPU upgrade???

Hey,

I have an Intel 1.6 ghz T2050 Core Duo, and I was wondering what sort of upgrades I can install to increase the performance of my laptop?

Can I install a faster Core Duo processor? Can I install a Core 2 Duo processor without changing the motherboard????

I'm really curious to find out what sort of upgrades I can install on my laptop, thanks in advance for all your help.

Thanks!

Yeah. You would be going from Yonah to Merom which does not require a new mobo. The highest Core 2 duo would be the 2.33 Ghz T7600. I just checked on Dell's site and they still have a few E1405 systems with Core 2 Duo in them.

Thanks melshaw!

2 more questions... What type of processor would I search for? Which socket type is it?

Do you know any good places in Canada to find new / used processors?

T7200 = 2.0 Ghz
T7400 = 2.16 Ghz
T7600 = 2.33 Ghz

Anything Less than the T7200 Just wouldn't be worth it. Socket 478 Mobile. Ebay is gonna have the best prices.

I found a T7300 CPU... what's the diff between the 7200 and 7300?
post #6 of 12
the T7300 will not run in your mobo, as its a different socket. The difference is a 667MHz FSB to a 800MHz FSB.

Hrmmm, okay thanks! That could have been bad!!!

Okay so a few more questions... does the Core 2 Duo consume less power than the Core Duo?

Can I install Windows XP 64 bit with the Core 2 Duo?

I think I have 533 mhz ram, do you think that will be a problem? If I need to get more ram, what should I look for? What's the ram specification that would fit inside my laptop?

C2D do consume more power than core duos, yes you can install XP 64-bit on a core 2 duo. As far as RAM goes, whats your current CPU?

Right now I have the T2050

If I understand things right... The T2050 is a 533 Mhz FSB, so it will run with 533 Mhz ram.

If I put in a T7200 with 2 gigs of PC2-5300 667 mhz ram, that'll work right?

Yes. if u get DDR2-4200 now, thats fine. if u go with 5300, it will simply downclock to 4200 speeds. I would just go with 5300 in case u decide to upgrade your CPU.

Do you think it would be a bad idea to install windows xp 64 bit after I upgrade to a Core 2 Duo?

Are there enough 64 bit drivers for my laptop for it to run properly?
