Got a refund for E1705....After a year

Alright, so here's what happened....

8/2/06 - Bought a brand spankin new E1705 - T2500, X1400, 2GB, 120GB, WUXGA, etc. Within the next month I get NMI pairty bluescreens. Soon it becomes weekly, so i reformat to no avail. so I start reading NBF for solutions. I tried reformatting twice, exchanged ram sticks with known working ones 3 times, exchanged video cards to 7900gs, and used many different drivers to no avail. Anyway, at that time, school was in session, so I did not have time to deal with Dell and decided to live with it despite it sometimes crashing during essay sessions. This notebook though has helped me make a good habit of saving every 15 minutes.

8/21/07 - After a trip overseas I decided to finally fix the problem by calling up dell. They decide that a motherboard/ram replacement was what I needed, so I went along with their plan.

8/27/07 - Mobo/ram replaced by tech.

8/28/07 - BSOD
So this time I get on the phone again, and now they suggest I send it into a depot. Of course, this would take a couple of days and I refuse and ask for a refund so they would take me seriously instead of asking me to do more replacements. They offer me a refurb replacement, and I refuse one time so they offer me that replacement again saying its the last option etc etc no refunds can be issued after 30 days or whatever. On top of that, they bribed me with 50 bucks credit, so I couldnt refuse

9/4/07 - I bugged them on chat for for the notebook, and they put me on expedite, but did not offer an order number and said the department was on backorder.

9/8/07 - I bugged them on chat again for the computer, and asked them to put me on double expedite (I dont know if they did that or not, but it was interesting they accepted my double expedite request )

9/9/07 - I checked my order status and finally my laptop was in production.... seemed like they ordered a new one. Same specs as mine, but with a 8600gt. I was thrilled I was upgraded, but not thrilled as I had Windows Vista since many applications I use have compatibility issues with Vista. The same day I chatted up and asked them if I could get windows xp, so I was transferred from cust service to tech support where tech support said no so back to cust service. This guy from customer service then after a while of I guess talking to his manager says he could give me a refund since it is the only option.

So, after I visit the UPS store to drop off my E1705 who has a recommendation on what to get? I got around 2k to blow and now with awesome dell support I wouldn't even mind getting a used/refurb as long as its got complete care.

Also, got a 7900GS Dual Pipe for sale for anyone who's interested. The card is unlocked, and very slightly overclocked. Pulled working from my old machine.

Well, if you don't need the high-end GPU (seeing as you were getting a x1400, I assume that's the case), I would get a m1330. Slick little machine, with an 8400 DX10 card, HDMI, and XPS support.

Or check out their accessories... you could get a cheap laptop and anything from digital cameras to an xbox 360...

I've actually been spoiled when I played around with the 7900GS haha, so I was hopin for something with that or even better :P. I was thinkin more along the lines of a 1710 since thats still offered in styles of XP. Of course, the money is getting returned to my original mode of payment, so I dont have to blow everything through dell.

Ebay a good alternative?

Jackasses raised M1330 prices alot. Look in Ebay for good prices.

Hello everyone,

I'm uninitiated and live wayout where web sites are places spiders live. The only way to get a pizza delivered is UPS.
So, is the 9400/1705 the most unstable platform on the planet? Are there issues that require more attention than usual? Mine sucks and has a list of updates a mile long. I spend most of my time maintaining this box.
I installed "speedupmypc" to gain some gaming power and it seem to inject lower case "b"s in every input box it could. It even renamed some files in my Broadcom directory. I could use a list of what files should be in that dir. Dell support hasn't been helpful. My box won't restore and somehow copied every file in the system.
del /s *(2).* helped.
I'm seeing evidence that back in the world, there maybe inherent problems.
Are there?
Any news would be helpful. Thanks

I actually went through something similar. I bought a decked out E1705 last year, had occassional blue screens, eventually complained about it - then after 3 visits by DELL techs I was still having blue screens. First they sent me at Vosotro. I told them I felt the GPU was not comparable and that I needed XP for my current software. Then they sent out a XPS M1710 with an upgraded hard drive, extra battery, and a new carrying case - of course with XP. I am a happy camper.

Imagining1- Well, the E1705 apparently has problems with a NMI bluescreen that you will hear lots about as soon as you do a search on the forums. Apparently this is a pretty widespread problem that has happened to users of all graphics cards including the integrated, but moreso on the x1400 and the 7900gs. What you're describing is software issues and with updating and stuff, so you should be okay just running all the updates. I've actually never heard of speedupmypc, so I don't think I should be the judge of that, but it sounds like its a crap piece of software. What I'd do in your case is contact dell and ask them to send you restore disks for your computer. It's free of charge and it can bring your computer back to its factory condition. Make sure to backup all your files before you do so.

anettis - Yeah I was hopin they'd send me a M1710 and thats what a tech recommended when I asked him what I should do since the 1720 wont ship with XP. As soon as I got back to customer service though, the representative went straight to telling me that since I can't have Vista, there is no other option than to issue a full refund for my computer. God I was shocked haha. Well as soon as I get my 2,000 back I'm thinking of getting a M1710 on ebay or something. Of course, now I trust dell's support and I think a used machine with complete care should work out just fine.
