OK, so I've got an Acer 8204 that I bought in Feb 06, and it's run great since then. One day, it started making a clicking noise which sounded suspiciously like a breaking HDD. I powered it down, and the Win files were corrupt. But a HDD scan didn't indicate that anything was bad, so got all my data off, did a reinstall of XP, and all seemed well.
Occasionally, after some intensive application work (I first thought it was Adobe stuff), the computer will "crash", and by that I mean I can use the mouse (no clicking) and some keyboard functions, but nothing that will affect the GUI. Seemed like RAM, and an all night memtest86+ gave me 50-something errors.
I replaced both sticks of RAM, but now the same thing happens. CPU core temp never seems to make it over 65C and the fan seems to be working fine, so heat doesn't seem to be an issue.
Are there any other things that might be causing the errors? Reading around, it seems that some people had issues with the motherboards on these machines.
My current plan of action:
- Swap out the HDD and try installing XP with a new drive.
- If that doesn't work, Panic!
If this is a mobo issue, does anybody know how much Acer will charge to replace it?
Thanks,
darius
