5760 and Windows XP Pro x64

Hi everyone,

I did a few forum searches and came up empty-handed, so I'll throw it up here in a new post.

I bought a 5760 back in October of 2006, and it's been an awesome machine so far. However, I'm thinking of upgrading in some areas and wanted to pick people's brains about it. I currently have a T2500 Intel chip, but I'd like to replace that with a T7200 to gain some performance and 64-bit capabilities. I'd also like to upgrade my OS to Windows XP Pro x64, since it's the only Windows OS I can get without going to Vista.

I remember seeing a post where someone upgraded their own CPU, so I know that can be done. My question is this: Is anyone else using Windows XP 64-bit on a 5760? I've heard rumors of driver issues and and whatnot, but I'm not about to drop a few hundred bucks to find out I can't work on my system. Has anyone run into problems with drivers- especially the QuadroFX 2500 or the onboard sound card?

Thanks in advance fo your replies!

First of all if you want to goto 64 XP 64 was a failure so I would go to Vista 64 rather then XP. It would he horiffic to find drivers for XP 64. If the processor uses the 945 chipset it should be compatible.

Thanks, Orlbuckeye.

I've been researching the topic over the past couple days and so far it seems like Vista would be the better bet just because it will become the mainstream before long, hence there will be more drivers available in time. Thanks for your reply!

why use a 64bit OS if you cant install more than 4gb of ram in the machine?

Why do some people modify their sports cars to go over 200mph when the posted speed limit rarely exceeds 65 mph?

Sarcasm aside, I want 64-bit because I can take full advantage of that 4GB of ram as opposed to the 2.8GB limit I currently face.

I also want to start using the 64-bit capabilities of my 3D Modeling software. Being able to build more complex scenes adds to the realism I can achieve and provides me with more options that won't inhibit the creative process.
