Dell fried my GPU

Well i sent my XPS Gen 2 in for the vertical line issue, got it back and loaded up CS:S... after 5 minutes of gaming my comp locks up .. reboot and get nothing on my screen , hook to an external monitor and get blue artifacts every ware.. so yea after calling tech support they conclude its the GPU that was fried and that dell is at fault... my comp is out of warrantee but dell is owning up to it... so my question here is.. what will i get back? i heard they ran out of 6800 ultras a long time ago, and recently are out of 7800 GTXs.... seeing how thats the only two that are of equal to or greater value that will fit in my system.. do you think they will sub me out for a 1710?

They may have to at this point. GL.

Add the warranty if you can while your at it. It's worth it.

I agree about the warranty part too. Add that in if you can. Its totally worth it.

Hope you get the M1710. I see some members are getting the 1720 as replacements.

a XPS will NEVER be replaced with an inspiron. That goes against company policy.

They'll probably give ya a 1710 unless they can dig out another 6800 ultra for you. I doubt they'll try to scam you out of a working system with or without warranty cause it's their fault. I definately would add teh warranty with the new system whenever it comes. I never buy warranty, but with the price of laptop parts, and the accident rate, it's definately worth it.

Generally speaking, if your system comes back from Depot in worse condition than that which it left Dell will replace the entire system. Even for a special warranty case such as the vertical line issue. I can't 100% guarantee that, but odds are good that they will replace the whole system. However, if they can restore your Gen2 to working condition I'd take that and be happy.

One week ago, the SAME thing happened to me. You'll probably get a 7950GTX 512 just like I did.

I shipped mine on Friday and it arrived on wednesday.

But he can't use a 7950GTX...

He meant the guy should expect a replacement M1710 w/ GTX I think.

I didnt realize you couldnt use a 7950GTX.

If they can, they will. I'm sure they'll put in the fastest card your machine will handle.

But if you dont have a warranty, and cant buy one, your probably going to have to pay for it yourself.

well i didnt have any warranty on it, but dell did own up to it, saying that if it is the GFX card that dell will make it right.. ill be honest, i would be 100% happy with a 6800 ultra back, but a 1710 would be sweet too... whatever it is, it arrives today. so we will see what i got back... ill post an update ... VincentFunk was your comp out of warrantee too? .. oh and i bought the comp back in the day with 2x 256 mb ram... swapped it out for 2x 1gig... do you think ill get my ram back? hell with my luck they will see that i put AS5 on my GPU and screw me over

No, I've still got 2 years left on my warranty. When it expires, i'm buying another 3 years.

Actually, i'm gonna keep buying it till it's so obsolete I'll get a totally new machine

I've learned from my older sony vaio that having them pay to ship it and fix it is totally worth it. Even if its a $100 bux a year, it'll be worth it.

Chances are they're gonna upgrade your video card and leave the rest of the system the way it is.

I got the machine in my sig after numerous replacement parts and trips by the local onsite tech! And yes, i still have the balance of the original warranty of my xps2 until the end of march 2008, and you can bet your a$$ that i'll be extending it as long as they allow. PLUS it allows my IT budget to NOT have to expend money on a new laptop for me for another 3 years!

good luck with your situation...did they ever say why or how it got fried or do they not know?
