Basically you have it set to, lets say English, and you want to be able to type Japanese characters on it?

Hit the Apple in the upper left corner, and go into System Preferences. Then, go to the International Preference Pane there, and then navigate the to Input Menu tab. You should be able to take care of it from there.

If only the backlit keyboard were actually the electronic paper stuff where the keys would also change to the character set you selected.

Ah but that would be too much... And I would set mine to Fremen.
