Looking for a T61

I am currently shopping around for a notebook. I have a work one, which is a T43 which I have used for the last 2 years. I think it is a great computer. Solid machine. I was wondering if anyone out there has recently purchased a T61? If so what are your over all opinions about its wieght, the features it comes with. I know IBMs are more buisness machines, but do they offer a good market for the indiviudal user? I am a little tired of Dell. I know Sony is a good name out there as well. I was even considering the Apple Macbook Pro, but it is a lot of money to spend on a machine that I will need for basic uses. I would rather pay half the money and install Red Hat and take my hand at unix. I also want something with good battery life and is portable. It does not have to be ultra light however. The T43 I use is the perfect size.

Specs I was looking at were a 2.2 GHz Dual Core processor, 2 Gigs of ram, 160 Gig HD.

Any advice?

I just bought a T61p with 2.2Ghz, 2G Memory and 100G HD 7200 rpm. I use it for CAD operation mainly. I was looking at the DELL 4300 workstation laptop. For the money, Lenovo (IBM) was cheaper and some one the CAD retailers recommended to get IBM, better machine than DELL and with better features. No problems found. I used to own Sager laptops, excellend machines also. But AutoCAD changed the software GUI driver and some video cards did not work with it, that is why change to Lenovo. So, my recommendations: Lenovo or Sager.

did you buy from direct lenovo site? I hear they are having a bad customer service reputation.

I did from the web site. I have not used the customer service yet, so I cannot say anything about it. When I order the laptop, I did talk to a life person and he pointed out something to change.

Your questions and dilemma are almost exactly where I am right now in the decision-making process. My choices have come down to a T61 or Apple Macbook Pro. I would rather pay for the Lenovo because its cheaper and, frankly, I don't do any video editing or photo editing. I, too, have heard many (and I do mean many) customer complaints about ordering from the website and the shipping delays/errors that people have encountered. That's got me very nervous right now. Whatever information you get from this thread would benefit the both of us.

Lenovo currently has some killer deals, check here:

I just ordered a T61 for a great price; cheaper than the Dell Latitude D630 I was sorely tempted on.

First off, the shipping delays are largely gone on the T61/61p line. There were quite a few horror stories this past year, but if you check Notebookreview.com's forums, you'll find an entire thread on it --the thread indicates that things have settled down. I myself ordered a custom build on 2/21; it shipped out 2/24, and should be here this Friday. Currently you can get a great machine for $1,000-1,300 with all the toys.

I've never trusted Sony; every VAIO laptop I've seen in recent years has placed style over sturdiness, and parts/repair (should you need it) has historically been very expensive with Sony. They have plenty of features, and some models may make great multimedia/theater laptops, but I wouldn't use one for business/workstation stuff.

Macbook Pros are pretty awesome, but pricey. If you choose to go this route, look at Apple's Certified Refurbished product. Due to the release of new Penryn-core processor Macbook Pros, the slightly-older Merom-core 15" Macbook Pro can be found as a Certified Refurb for $1449 with the same warranty as new, and the same option to buy the AppleCare extended-warranty. About the cheapest you'll find for a MBP you won'g be able to differentiate from new.

This is some good information. Thank you for posting it.
