what drivers would you reccomend for the cpu and the gpu? This has 2x256 nvidia 7900gs' and i'm using forceware version 84.74. Im unsure what release for the cpu I'm using, but it is the default factory version.

edit(but please still answer the driver question from above):
I just tried defragging and I got a BSOD, which showed the error lying as nvatabus.sys. This is not the first time I've seen this error since my troubles started a few days ago though. I thought my machine was bricked just two days ago when I turned on the PC and wambambooey, it did the alienhead screen, then the screen after had that same error report(not a BSOD, mind you--a 'hey dude this drivers broken so press 'r' to restart homeboy' screen). So I popped in the windows CD, reinstalled all the schpealio(to my knowledge) and blah Im back here.
Oh, I might add the fact that this whole time I was able to boot into safe mode with ease, and it ran like a charm...or at least like the best runner at the special olympics.

Ok, nvatabus.sys error is definitely your problem. A lot of people have the same issue and the only way to apparently solve this problem is to "re-format" and then re-install everything. You probably did not re-format when you did your re-install.
This is a common "malware" problem and cannot be repaired without RE-FORMATTING. Google the error and you will see what I mean.
The other cause of this problem is overclocking at unsafe clock frequencies, so if you tried overclocking recently, you may have pushed your GPU's a little too hard. Again, do a backup, total RE-FORMAT and install from scratch...do not attempt a repair or install over current OS because it wont work.
nvatabus.sys causes crashes, slowdowns and extremely long computer startups....
Let us know how it goes....
