Great job guys. I think you've got several winners on your hands there, Boyd - as any combination of the parts you've included should make a great system.

I think the hardest part about doing the $1500 system is resisting the urge to do just 'one more upgrade'...
I know that's rite, could turn into a $4,500 system real quick!

Hopefully everyone will keep up the work.

Sorry Boyd for not editing my stuff into your post! I didn't see to edit it in and forgot it by the time I posted
post #26 of 43
Thats cool pdonket, not mandatory. Just trying to make it easier to keep up with all the great suggestions for shazza's challenge.

We are gonna get this thing down to $1,400 at this rate!

Throw her in there Rockinfella2k...but then you have to find some other way to cut $120.

With the budget limitations, there's just no way unless you get a total crap system other than the GPU Hell, the case we have no probably wouldn't even have room for the ultra due to length of the card! We're talking at least a tsumani size case if not full tower to fit that thing inside. Now....if shazza would create a $2000 system build thread....

Actually why don't we create different price categories and frequently update them so that passers by can just click their price range and see what the newest part set up would be for them?

Maybe, hmmm, $500-$1000 : $1000-$1500 : $1500-$2000 : $2000+ ? What does everybody think?
I'm hoping to swing by Micro Center and Fry's tomorrow to check out the Cooler Master RC-690 case (hopefully they have one of these new arrivals). The price is definitely rite for a build of this caliber and to hear all the buyers talk on Newegg is really pretty nice. Even has holes for LC. Can you imagine?

The case section does need some more suggestions though. Hard to beat that Samsung SATA ODD, Creative DSP...why haven't I ordered 'em yet?

Not a bad idea pdonket, though may take the focus off shazza's original theme. Maybe start a few other threads?

Fine with me if folks want to do other price ranges ... I just thought it would be fun to see what we could come up with ... and there's lots of good ideas in here.
I was just thinking it would be easier than for all of us to aid each individual builder and appeal to the masses better and just keep frequent with updates. I'll hope they get sticky'd and then it'll be great for passers by

Gar! Long time no see! (Doc House)

Your processor may bottleneck your GPU. However, in regards to your HSF, I picked up the same one from NewEgg, should be here in a few days.

Just spring for a Core 2 Duo, even lowest end isn't much more than that Dual Core.

Hey there!!!

I'm getting that CPU because it's dirt cheap and overclocks REALLY well... we're talking 3GHz speeds usually on stock cooling. It's still a dual core with the same tech as the more expensive processors, just smaller cache. It should do just fine. Otherwise we'll see what the prices are when it comes time to build.
I suggest you hop on craigs...A E6600 is only 100 bucks or so on their...That processor is going to kill that card...Way to overpowered. And going from 2mb cache to 4mb gave me a extra 1000 points in 3dmark05, so yes it makes a difference.
you guys forgot the fragbox case because that case kicks some arse- but it is really expensive- why is it mrore expensive when it is smaller? lol

Looks pretty good, RockSteady.

I'd skip the physics processor and go with the 8800GTX (unless you want to wait for the new cards).

I don't know anything about the NIC, but have read some so so reviews on what it actually gives you.
Both are probably the most useless parts on the list but I'm interested in actually laying hands on both of them. I'm the guy that bought both the Canopus 3dfx Pure3D card, and then the Pure3DII with their Nvidia TNT card which I guess was more a novelty than anything else... I'm into the esoteric parts thus me starting to build the "Also Ran" computer I spec'd out elsewhere.
