Spilled Water on my E1705 :-( Keyboard Help

Thread Starter
So I accidentally spilled some water on my laptop this evening. i dried everything out and everything seems to be working fine..except for that my left "Ctrl" key is acting really weird. Something is making it seem like it's being constantly held down (although it physically isn't). The only way I can disable this is through the On-Screen Keyboard in Windows XP. But after hitting the particular Ctrl key, it goes back to being held down again. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Or is this something that wouldn't cost too much to repair? Thanks in advance!

My guess is that there is some water stuck in the keyboard shorting out that key.

It should dry out in a day or two.

I remember reading on this forum about a year ago where a guy had a laptop that got completely soaked. He put it in the oven at 115-120 F for 6 hours and it dried out and he booted her right up.... I dont know about putting my laptop in the oven, but maybe if its sunny out, set it on a desk in front of a window so the sun can shine on and dry er' out... Fans work to... lol

A few shots of canned air under the offending key can help too. And 115 to 120 degrees in the oven shouldn't permanently damage the system, but just to be safe I'd keep it closer to 100 degrees. Some of this new solder takes very little heat to melt it.

Yep - brought one for my 9400 from dell (Grey XPS), also had a water spill from the kids - pulled apart dried out and cleaned all water from the system full strip down and clean. After rebuild all was OK then the kids broke off the "I" key - totally broke the little tab on the bottom - so got a fine needle heated it on the gas stove till red hot put it through the hole this melted it into the plastic case (on the side of the key) and held it fine. This keyboard still works fine but decided I better replace it in case the darn thing breaks at a critical moment.

Cost $A44 dollars so US around $38 - so it wasn't a major cost anyway. you could always get something cheaper from e-bay.
