howdy,

is it actually possible to install a 2nd HDD in a XPS M1710? I have searched the i-net but didnt find any clear answer - a 2nd HDD is never mentioned but also it no where said, in any review that i read through, that it wouldnt be possible.

pls lemme know - thx

It's not doable without modding. Some have reported success by putting a second HD in the CD drive bay - but I'm not sure what kinds of components are needed for that.

There's usually a Hard Drive rack for sale around eBay that will let you put a 2nd HDD in place of your Optical. Unfortunately you can't use your optical and hard drive at the same time, and they aren't hot swappable.

you could always buy an el-cheapo external slim line USB CD drive if you needed the 2nd HDD more

You can get the a housing that takes a 2.5 ide drive in the cd bay (no modification) then you can also get a housing that takes the cd drive you just removed from the bay for the other hard drive and turn it to a USB dvd burner. This USB dvd burner does not require any 2nd power support at least for as long as I have had it. I current am not using either of these two devices (the bay adapter or the external cd case) if you want to work out something pm me.
