My 2 Cents on Distrowatch Top 10 list

For those of you who haven't been to DW in a while they are having issues but the mirrors still work fine so if just www.distrowatch.com isn't working for you try http://distrowatch.serve-you.net/ and you should be fine. In the last few days I saw that PCLOS was getting close to Ubuntu on teh rankings, and today PCLOS is now #1. (PCLOS -- 2522 hits vs Ubuntu -- 2517). This gave me the great idea to well...quickly analyze whats going on on the chart.

1. PCLOS 2007 --- Why now? Don't get me wrong, I think its a great distro and if somebody likes KDE PCLOS is actually better in many respects than Kubuntu..much better. However it has been some time since the 2007 release and there is little word on the next version. Lets not forget that its almost a 1-man-show with Texstar leading the way so release cycles are slow. Typically hits on distrowatch go up as a release is coming... there is no release, so why a sudden spike in hits?

2. Ubuntu --- Long time #1 finally took a back seat... granted its in mid-cycle right now so nothing interesting going on thus not a lot of new hits.

3. openSuse --- i am surprised its this high...why? I am gonna go ahead and say its because of newbs and those who don't know better. Of course its rapidly approaching release date...there is a new beta every 2 weeks so that is perhaps generating traffic.

4. Fedora --- same as suse..i am confused as to why its this high. again probably because there are betas coming out every few weeks and thus generating traffic.

5. Sabayon --- in the last few months it moved up a LOT. distro is gaining a lot of popularity with its frequent releases and pretty sweet features. gentoo for the common man!

6. Mint --- moved up a lot recently too from the 40s to top 10. Interesting enough. Perhaps this justifies Ubuntu's fall from grace. Those who would previously have gone to ubuntu are now splitting off to the Mint camp thus actual ubuntu hits = ubuntu + 3/4(mint) (you'd think the other 1/4 is genuine mint fans).

7. Debian --- always a favorite among long time users. with its wide range of supported architectures and huge repos i am not surprised its hanging on in the top 10.

8. Mepis --- I am not exactly sure where this distro fits in. Its a debian-based KDE centric distro that recently flopped over to Ubuntu as its base. I assume Mepis to Kubuntu is what Mint is to Ubuntu... essentially the same at its base with some custom programs, scripts and tweaks to make it a little better. Last I tried mepis it suffered from poor stability and horrible memory leaks.

9. Mandriva -- since Mandrake 10 which was the peak of its popularity mandriva has been on a decline. IMO from the "big 3" (rh/fedora, (open)suse, mandriva) commerical distros this would be the best...but just my opinion..which doesn't seem to be the opinion of the distrowatch population b/c mandriva is ranked the lowest of all 3. in either case last i heard they are pissed off that the french gov chose ubuntu over them...

10. Damn Small -- this is interesting. I would venture to say people love live-cds / live-usb and a full productive distro @ 50mb is something of a curiosity to say the least. Perhaps a share of this traffic is from people still on dial-up who are interested in linux and simply can't download the standard 700mb isos for traditional cds. just a guess.

anyway....just my 2 cents on whats going on in the DW world.

the fact that mepis is still up there confuses me. they changed to ubuntu, and just recently announced that they will be switching BACK to debian. how could the users not be upset with all this change?

as for DSL, even though i use ubuntu, i have a copy of this distro on my usb flash drive. i figure a lot of people do.

gentoo has been out of the top 10 for a while (replaced by sabayon), but i think its still worthy and comparable to all those other top 10 distros

pretty much feel the same way as you do abf

I don't find it at all surprising that OpenSuse and Fedora are toward the top of the top 10. They both have 'for pay' versions that are very popular with industry. If someone has RedHat at work, I think it makes perfect sense for that person to play with, or even use as his/her primary desktop at home the 'open' version of the same OS. And if you're looking to 'try linux' and have an acquaintance who uses linux at work, which one will they suggest when you ask them about it?

As for PClinuxOS I've not played with it, but it seems to me, that for many users the interface IS the OS, and before Ubuntu took off like a rocket, KDE was considerably more popular than Gnome. Frankly I was always kind of surprised that Kubuntu wasn't more popular than it has been, since it marries the most popular GUI to the most popular distro. The leap frog here may have somthing to do with new Ubuntu users getting more comfy with linux in general and starting to look around. PClinuxOS DOES get a fair amount of praise on forums like this one. The only thing that surprises me a bit about this is why wouldn't they just shift to Kubuntu? unless they just want to 'try something new'.... you can identify with that, I imagine.

didn't like pclos. aside from kde, which pisses me off with little crap, (even though it looks better and overall i like the apps more than the equivalent gtk ones) the repos were awful enough to keep me away from it.

definitely agree with doc about suse/fedora in the top10.

Strange but I think I am going to give PClinuxOS a try. abf you say that it boots faster the Kubuntu right?

That's the point. The first time in my life that I heard about Linux it was from a friend at school who used a Red Hat on a local ISP. Anyway, as a clueless person, my first distro was slackware, and only because it wasn't huge like RH (and thus was easier to get). Bad, because it's not good for a newbie. Good, because I had so much free time when a kid that I learned a lot from it.

At least on my hardware (amd64 3200+, 1gb pc2700 ram, 60gb 7200rpm hdd, ati 9700 128mb) on average i clock PCLOS @ about 40 sec, ubuntu @ 1 min, and my current arch setup is actually @ 32 sec right now. you can always disable unneeded services to boot (i disabled cups, hplip, bluetooth, anacron, and few others) to further reduce boot time.

I don't know what the problem with PCLOS repos was for you YD. Yes they don't have quite as many apps as ubuntu repos, but still a significant selection. You might have tried them around the time they switched to the new version of the gcc compiler (i think thats what it was) so they had to rebuild all their apps in the repos...and again due to low manpower the process took a while to get the rest of the apps up on teh repos. as far as download speeds for their repos i found them to be about average.

The key to PCLOS lies in its Mandrake base (but with every release they are moving away further and further from it, actually since 2007 was launched pclos is no longer compatible with mandriva rpms). Of course like all mandrakes the key there is Drax Tools (the famous mandriva control center). I personally find them very handy (compared to say Suse's Yast) for doing certain tweaks...of course other projects still require use of text mode and .conf file edits.

Holy Crap even on LiveCD PCLinuxOS is pretty damn snappy. I am backing up my data now and going to install it instead of Kubuntu. (That and I need to fix the partitions on my HD anyways.

It wasn't so much the apps as most of the stuff I use is in pretty much every repo, it was just that was speed was unbearable. That and KDE made me switch back. When KDE4 comes out I'll try it and kubuntu again.

Well PSLOS has been running for a day now and so far so good. Like it better then Kubuntu for now have to spend some time with it to see what I really think.
