shazza's Work Log: My first attempt at Water Cooling

Okay guys ... I've never done a work log before, so this will probably end up being more of a series of random postings as I go through this build. I'll post all the parts I'm using sometime later ...

This is the Mountain Mods case - U2-UFO Opti-1203 in brushed Aluminum:

View from the back:

And, finally ... some perspective on just how big this case is:

I made lots of progress on Day 1 - Put the Feet on :

and yes, I did get them on the bottom of the case. The case also comes with four casters/wheels - but I plan on setting this on top of the desk, so will use the acrylics.

I put the MB, HD, and essentials in to see if everything booted - it did! But I had a problem with the EVGA 8800GTX card - it won't seat properly because the backplate sticks out too far, so I used a 7800 GTX to make sure all is well. Here are a couple of shots of the build in "test mode" - just threw it together to make sure everything was working:

What's next for Week 1? How about taking that $500 video card apart? Didn't know what I was doing, so just started unscrewing everything I could ... and here's the result:

Ewwwww... lot's of gunky stuff:

Next came an experiment to see if I could hook up 3 fans ... after some snipping/sleeving/splicing/soldering, here's my first try:

Didn't heatshrink the long piece yet, as I have to hook in the RPM wire. But, I wanted to see if it would work. Ta Da ...

I think the next one will go faster : and look better. I used the green sleeve because I couldn't get the black stuff I had over the wires. My connections are soldered (I haven't wielded a soldering iron in over 30 years! I didn't really think those early years in the lab would come in useful at this late stage in life). It helps to have a husband who is a model train making guru who has all the tools I needed!

And, here's a preliminary mock-up for the cooling loop layout. Still working on final placement.

wow shazza you have made a lot of progress in your building abilities in a very short amount of time.

(now you'll be the one saying "build your own desktop....don't waste money on pre builds")

Holy shit that looks good!

Keep us posted.

Shazza, are you waiting for those damn barbs for the PA 120.3?

I noticed you didn't have any installed in the rad. lol

Your build looks almost exactly like mine. We'll have to compare results.

Got the barbs in this past week. Ordered them directly from Thermochill in the UK.

I have everything I need now, just have to get some time.

Good deal, I got 12 copper barbs for it, from my work.. lol

I might sell em?

haha, I'm just kidding Whatever makes you happy is great! I wish I could afford an awesome liquid cooled PC. Maybe one day I'll be up to that level in cash and skill

Well ... think about the trade offs ... being young with limited cash, or being 50 and working 60+ hour weeks ...

True that, but essentially I still have 40+ work weeks just school work and I don't get paid

But it's not too bad, I think I can deal with it.

A little progress on the GPU and EK water block. Question of the day --- will it still work after this torture???

of course it will. its being built by shazza.

ty, Duke - altho you have more confidence than I do!

Progress from the last few days is not much but making some headway.

First, cleaning out the radiator:

The glass on the left is what I got after soaking overnight after several rinses with hot deionized water. The middle glass is what came out after rinsing out the junk from the overnight soak, and the glass on the left shows there's still some cleaning to do after a few more rinses:

Setup a temporary loop to do some prelimary leak testing and figure out how to bleed this thing:

hmmmnnnn ... tried a few things (raising the pump/res higher than everything else), and still have air in there. Seems to be pretty difficult to get the air out of the radiator. Oh well, the benefits of testing before hand. I'm not going to be able to turn my case upside down when it's all in there, so gotta figure this out.

This pic is after things have settled down a bit ...

once again... even you're cleaning is neat... wtf?
