Best 15" SXGA screen?

All things equal, I'm thinking that my ideal resolution would 1400x1050 on a standard 15" screen. But are there any of equal or better quality to the Dell widescreens? I mean in terms of outdoor viewability, LCD response, etc. I'm pretty sure I want to stay with Pentium-M as well, for battery life.

I hear Sony and Fujitsu screens are the brightest, but that Sony doesn't look all that great in bright ambient (outdoor) light. It washes out or something. Has anyone else heard this?

I stopped into CompUSA earlier this week to compare screens for an online purchase and *by far* the best looking screens were these two Sony Vaio w/ XBrite TFT LCDs.

The K17, in particular, had a crystal clear 15" screen & very bright even w/ all the light in the store (don't know about ambient, tho). Only problem w/ the K Series is that they're XGA--1024x768.

The GRT390Z has a 16.1" UGA, which is very nice, too. I priced one of these out online & didn't seem too bad (but I'm switching to Apple when the Powerbook G5s come out). If you don't mind doing your own installs, you can get this Vaio for $1500 base & then custom build it yourself with much better parts. For instance, Sony's HDs are only 4200rpm.

Hope that helps.

The GRT Series do not have a Pentium M option, unfortunately.

The Z1 Series is based on the Pentium M, but the screen is only 14" and it's a bit pricey. Too bad SONY probably won't come up with a 15" Dothan for a resonable price next month. Prove me wrong and I'm all over it.

You will have better luck hoping Fujitsu will release a Dothan/Sonoma based notebook with Crystal View (even better than XBrite). Fujitsu have some decent Centrino laptops. Hopefully they will see the light (no pun intended) and release a powerful Dothan laptop with that fantastic screen.

Thanks. I was looking at the Fujitsu E-series, but they don't offer a DVD burner. Also I'm a little leery of the shared-RAM video, but I guess the closed I'd come to gaming would be something like Flight Simulator. I wonder how the Intel GPU is with DVD playback?

Other than Fujitsu and Sony, does anyone else have better screens than Dell's widescreen models?

Not that I know of...it seems most notebook manufacturers uses relatively cheap Twisted Nematic screens from large manufacturers like LG, Samsung, Hitachi, among a few others. But Fujitsu and Sony orders high quality Multi-domain Vertical Alignment screens from more specialized manufacturers like Chi Mei Optoelectrics and IDTech. Sony may even make their own screens (I am not at all sure about that though).

noob question - not to hijack, but what is the best screen for clarity/brightness? I've notice the sony Xbrites in the store, love the display, but when looking online (Sager, etc.), what's the best - WXGA, SXGA, I don't know.

Thanks
