Toshiba A200-12X with cardreader messed up

Hi I have a Toshiba Satellite with less than 15 days of use and I sticked in a memory stick with no adapter and now it's inside, I tried to take it out and I broke up 2 pins..

Toshiba probably won't repair this because this can be considered as bad use.

If I open the computer, will the warranty go away? I don't seem to find any warranty stickers but I have no idea.

And, do you know if there's a way to fix this? like if this ias a card reader module just try to find one and installing it inside.

Thanks for your help.

Ugh, is there something I can do? what kind of protection does the computer have?

u can replace the hardware if u can find spare part. taking a laptop apart is not simple. i would just get an usb card reader and be done with it for now

cheers ...

I would need to know how, I've been fixing desktop computers for years, but I guess, that everybody can mess something, althought I never did, and I messed it up by just sticking a stupid memory stick card. I also want to getm y card back :P. Anyways the card reader is very at the bottom so I may have luck. Problem is the warranty, what kind of protection does Toshiba have? no warranty stickers as I see

No no.. I mean what kind of protection does the computer have when you open it so they know that ith as been opened.

I wanna open it because if I can fix it, Toshiba would never notice.. it's only 15 days old... well less
post #8 of 37
Dont worry, they have a way of knowing if its been opened.

people opens laptop all the times to replace hard.to.reach ram, optical drive ...protection is always good foe REAL defected part. Bottom line is this, if anything that does not work after u opened the comp, it is ur game. After u opened, and part becomes bad that is KNOWN from manufacturer, u r still covered. I hope this is clear enough. u r sure about ur capability to fix and explore - go for it

if u can fix it, then it is cool. as saugen48 said - Toshiba would know if the comp has been opened, and they would know why/how any parts were being going bad. And they r professional enough not to point finger if the machine parts are down by defects and not by abuse cheers ...

Thanks, then I dunno what to do, because I don't wanna void the warranty, and just because of a stupid thing like this. I wonder what kind of method do they have to know when a computer has been opened when there are no stickers. Thank you.

Anyways, do you know where I can find any service manual of A200-12X I have found manuals for other laptops that are not my model, I guess that maybe the Satellite A200 series are kind of new?

Also, where I can find a card reader module for the computer, or if you know if these Toshiba laptops have their card reader part of the motherboard?

Any info you can tell me is really appreciated, thank you all for your help.

have u tried accessing toshiba local from ur country and see if the service manual can be downloaded? some model r only available locally, so finding a manual is pretty much ur game.

mail toshiba support, they can give u an estimate of a cost, part number. as i see up until now, most card readers are NOT part of the mainboard.

cheers ...

Hi, thanks again for your reply, tried calling them and they gave me the phone of the nearest authorizated technical service, which still is a bit far, not very but a bit.

I called them and they gave me the mail of their support center, only a mail (I wonder why this couldn't be done om phone) I haven't sent any mail yet, I started searching for another solutions in Google and that's how I came here.

I didn't want to mail them yet until knowing if there are another solutions, obviously these people will probably take more much more money from me just to do something which shouldn't be very complicated.

You all seem to know a lot about laptops and I really value all the help you're giving me. If mailing them is the best solution now I will.

Thanks

nah, countries differ in way people work. post/mail allow more time to prep and make thing right/better sometimes. users do get 3rd party support when the main manufacturer/seller do not have a local office

hope things all work out for you

Hi, they replied back:

Buenos días:

Lo siento mucho, pero me temo que para solucionarlo , habría que cambiarle la placa base completa, y dado que es una rotura no está cubierto por la garantía y el precio de una placa nueva es bastante elevado, mi recomendación es que adquiera un lector multitarjetas en formato PCMCIA, que le costaría sobre 20 o 30 € y va introducido en dicha ranura, con lo cual apenas se notaría.

It means:
Good morning:

I am sorry, but to fix that, the motherboard would need to be replaced, and since breaking it that way isn't covered by the warranty, and the price of a new motherboard is expensive, my suggestion is that you buy a multi card reader in PCMCIA format which would be around 20 or 30€. So it would be more or less like the same

I didn't give them the address to this post, they replied again and said that best would be unplug the power and take out the battery and try to extract the card with some thing, and if there is any bended pin it's better to cut it to prevent a short. They can't be soldered because it comes encapsulated.

And the manipulation voids the warranty.

To saugen48:
Funny thing is that the manual doesn't mention anything about the card reader, which in fact it has, the manual is very simple at all. Doesn't contain any word about the card reader, but yes about other things, but not much at all.

Right now I'm downloading the manual from the webpage, to see if it's more complete than the one in the book, since this one doesn't mention about the card reader (it just says it's included in certain models, but nothing else)

In fact, now that I see, the fault shouldn't be mine, because I have a card reader in my desktop where you can insert memory stick as they are
