Excellent - so you loaned your money to the government interest-free for a year... Well, in the end, I am sure you will put it to better use than they did while they had it. Good luck to you!

Fortunately, no. I'm an independant contractor, so nothing's witheld from my paycheck; I just save $ myself. Not knowing how much self-employment tax was going to hit me for, I saved way more each month than was necessary. I just said 'refund' because it was easier than explaining that.

Thats awesome, I didnt think anyone got too much money back this year cus of that tea-bagger Bush. I get a whole 9 bucks back WHOOPITY DOO!!!
Good for you - you didn't loan the gov't money.

Don't know what "tea-bagger" means but Bush's tax cuts were *very* noticeable in *my* paycheck, certainly appreciate that a lot more than the usual politician (all sides) BS about "you are productive therefore you should pay more so we can redistribute it, and you should be ashamed for being a capitalist (but we like your paycheck, just don't get too attached to it...)"

I saw ZERO noticabel tax cuts in my paycheck, you must be up in the wealthy bracket therefore you see tax cuts but a guy like me who makes an average salary dosnet see jack s#$t of a tax cut.
natedog have you tried turbotax? that thing is good at finding tax reductions that you don't think you qualify for or even know about....
Yeah, thats what I used, I was about to go to H&R Block or somthing but I figured I wasnt going to get anything back anyways so why pay them money to tell me that.

That's weird. I have 20 employees and even those making under $15k/yr had their taxes reduced via the tax witholding table changes that went into effect last July. But obviously, since its a percentage decrease, the more you make, the more actual dollars the tax cuts created... If you only had a few dollars per paycheck more and you're (obviously) pissed about that, please send it to me. Of course, since the top 50% of wage earners (making over $28,528 per year in current dollars) pay 96.03% of "total income taxes", I'm not sure just how much you expect out of the remaining 3.97%.

It's even worse than that... the top 25% of earners pay 85% of income taxes. More if you factor in all the excise taxes.

All the more reason to drop income tax on the poor and middle class. We don't need their piddly dollars.

CAn u comment about how the tax refund works? I have worked in the summer and earned around 2k, but like 800 is being taxed My friend said you'll get tax refund but how does that work? I was 18 at the moment when i worked and i have little to no knowledge of doing taxes.
I THINK you have to make atleast 5k or over to get taxed? SO you MIGHT get it all back. Do not know for sure though, hopefully someone else here will for ya.

Yeah ...

Let's just tax the "rich" so 75% of the workforce live here tax-free. There's a great definition of "fairness". Give me a flat tax and rip the IRS code out by the roots. http://www.fairtax.org/

If only 25% of the people are paying taxes, there's every incentive for the other 75% to vote themselves more and more "benefits" like "free" healthcare for everyone and endless unemployment benefits until you decide to go back to work and more EITC tax "refunds" for those who don't pay taxes to begin with... until you break the "rich" and they just quit...

... and "Atlas Shrugged"

Like how it was before WW1? Yeah.

Forget the flat tax. Go with excise (sales). Income taxes were put there to keep all the wealth from accumulating into the hands of a few families... let's keep it that way.

Keep it what way? Out of the hands of those who earn it? How would a sales tax change that? Maybe I don't understand what you meant...but I'm not a big fan of the government deciding who should and who should not have wealth. That sounds much like Communism to me.

Er, that's what www.fairtax.org is... A Flat "Sales" Tax with deductions up to the poverty level. Everyone pays taxes on whatever they consume over that level. I would be in favor of either a flat "sales" tax or a flat "income" tax. The flat "sales" tax encourages more savings though since its tax free until spent. Anything that gets rid of the progressive and unbelievably intrusive current IRS code. IRS says "X" and its true until you "prove" otherwise. Guilty until you prove yourself innocent.

Maybe this thread should be moved or closed or another should be started before things get out of hand...

In principle you don't want to tax away earnings. I practice however, you presumably don't want society run by oligarchs and monopolists. Unless of course, you are not in favor of the principle of the republic (which may be the case).

The federal income tax will never be fair per se, because it was never intended to be fair.

From Ruml, 1946 chairman of the Fed Reserve Bank, NY:

The second principal purpose of federal taxes is to attain more equality of wealth and of income than would result from economic forces working alone. The taxes which are effective for this purpose are the progressive individual income tax, the progressive estate tax, and the gift tax. What these taxes should be depends on public policy with respect to the distribution of wealth and income. These taxes should be defended and attacked in terms of their effect on the character of American life, not as revenue measures.
