Power supply failed ?

Went to power up the Area 51 a few minutes ago and all that happened was the power suppy is making a high pitched squeeling noise. Its dead other than that. Any thoughts or opinions on a replacement. I remember that Alienware used a decent power supplied by I can't remember. My current supply is an ATX 480 Watt. Any ideas.

What about a Thermaltake?

PCPower&Cooling . The sli510 should be right for your power needs. Some of the best psu's out there IMHO (others too I'm sure). They used to be in AW's.

Or this one, a bit cheaper. PCP&C Silencer 610

PC power and cooling is a good choice.

I think were I getting a new power supply I'd go for a 700 watter. That way you'll be able to use it with newer hardware including high power SLI. Higher than that gets expensive quick and isn't necessary even for SLI with most setups.

Enermax, Thermaltake and coolermaster are also good lines.

I'm pretty sure Alienware is using HiPro psu's right now. Their standard is the 700W version that's here...

Whatever you do, don't cheap out on a psu. Spend a little extra the first time and it will pay off in the end. Myself, I like Hiper but everyone has their own opinions. If you're not gonna get a replacement from Alienware, make sure to read some thorough reviews before your commit to one.

PC power and cooling had there 750 series I believe it was the 750 series on sale for 75dollars at one time....its up to like 119 atm and you should really pick one of them up if you can.

Having more watts then what you really need might not be that bad of a thing down the line and going cheap on them can really hurt you in the long run (Starving your mobo/cpu/gpu of power etc etc can be even more hazardous to your wallet in the future).

Hi Boyd long time............

Well I got a power supply, next size up from the one AW used with a couple of features. Nice LED read-out of power useage that fits in drive bay and also LED on the side of the PS. Matched up perfectly in the Area 51 - I'm happy again. See link for details and pics.
OC'd to 4 GHz playing Half Life 2 I saw 235 Watts on the meter.

Boyd, Im still making power. Were building a new site in Palm Beach County. It'll start with 6 mitsubishi 501G Gas turbines 210 MW each and 2 Toshiba 500 MW Steam Turbines for 2400 MWs. We're already going ahead with planning for another 3 501Gs ndanother Toshiba for an addition 1200 MW. These Alenware computers use a lot of power!

Thats one heck of a project. You doing start-up?

I was at a Calpine Today, saved going into a energized Steam Turbine Bearings enclosure until the hottest part of the day for some reason and tried to work on the Heat Detectors that are used in conjunction with the Preaction Sprinkler System. Way too hot, way too loud and way too high up. Gonna recruit a young helper from the crew tomorrow, send him in with some real ear goggles (instead of the plugs I had in) a harness and a 24' extension ladder...cut him loose in there. I'll be the safety guy on the ground!

Gotta pay your dues to sing the blues!

Good luck with the new plant, soundz like state of the art!
