One thing left before I switch... 15.4 WSXGA+

Bless me, Steve, for I have sinned and blasphemed OS X in my ignorance. I humbly offer myself and my formerly pig-headed attitude toward all things Apple for your iArmy of zombie fanboys.

So what has made me a candidate for service as an acolyte? Well, I got the chance to work with a REAL Rails programmer (plug) , and then there's my iPhone... whuddyaknow, it IS a Unix computer. AppTapp >> install a proxy daemon, a http server, and a ssh daemon/client later, and color me a believer I want a Mac now.

So, if you will have me in your fold, my question is:
Can a 15.4 MacBook Pro be modded to use a WSXGA+ lcd screen (1680 x 1050 res or better)? I know a 15.4 WSXGA isn't an OEM option at the iStuff store, so I'm turning to the modders out there to help me out.

I haven't been able to successfully Google-up anything that says so, so I'm posing the question to the pro-users here. Anyone got ideas?

There have been reports of WUXGA (1920*1200) screens being successfully installed into MacBook Pros. Here is the kicker though...

You will have to open up your screen (obviously) and the rest of your laptop
You will have to have an external monitor to complete the install
You will have to get third party software to tweak the panel with
You might want to check out MacRumors.com/forums (i think that is the right one) and find the thread there about it)

It all started with a guy that took a MacBook Pro screen and bezel, dropped in a WUXGA panel and then attached that to his PowerBook... and now people with MacBook Pros want to do it too.

this may be moot when leopard is released. the OS is supposed to allow resolution-free scaling of the GUI, which means high res screens might be par for the course directly from apple. that's just speculation on my part however.

I've been wondering exactly the same thing; however, being that occasionally I'll do some Flash actionscripting on my notebook, I covet all the screen real estate I can get. Even if the interface were to scale, I still want to know the pixels will be there. There's a lot of resolution between WXGA and WSXGA I'm not willing to give up.

yeh. i haven't really looked into the various new OS GUI scaling solutions out there but intuitively one would assume that the GUI and ppi would be independent of each other in needed situations. i.e.- a GUI scaled to represent a ~100ppi inteface would do so for menus, buttons, etc. in photoshop, but would actually render the image at the actual screen res. make sense? like i said, that's just rhetoric on my part, but it would be a smart, useful way to use a scalable GUI, especially for graphics/media people.

That is how I have been led to understand Leopard's Res Independent UI is to work. The menus and what not will be dictated by physical size, not pixel quantity. So a box that is 2*2" on my macbook will appear 2*2" on a 30" WS.
