I need some headphones

Hello all. I am currently looking for some nice headphones for under $150. I have been looking at some threads here about headphones, but have a few questions.
Right now, I am looking at the Grado Labs Prestige series of headphones, but I was wondering if maybe I should get some noise cancelling headphones instead. I was just wondering what some of your opinions are on differences between noise cancelling and non-noise cancelling headphones. For those of you who have tried a couple/few pairs of each, which do you generally prefer, and why. The Grado Labs series is really interesting to me right now, as are a few of the Sennheiser headphones also. If you guys can think of any other brands/models I should be looking at, please let me know. Thanks for the help guys, really appreciate it.

First question you need to answer is what you will be using them for and what will your source be. (Ipod, actual receiver, pc sound card etc) Since you budget is $150 I'm assuming you don't have an amp.

If you really want to get involved in this process check out head-fi.org

I plan to mostly be using them for my laptop, listening to music and playing games. I will be using it for my iPod ocassionally, though. I just cant decide if I wanna go with noise cancelling or not. If not, then I will probably get the lower Grado Prestige headphones (the SR-60s i think? cant remember right off hand). If I decide on noise-cancelling, then I have no idea on which ones yet.

I would stay away from noise canceling. What kind of music do you listen to, Grado's are generally good for rock. What kind of games do you play?

Since it will be running from your pc w/out an amp don't get any cans w/ over 70-80 ohm's. Look for around 30'ish.

The ATH A700's are nice cans, kinda big. (good place to buy them is audiocubes.com)

You also need to decide if you want open or closed. Open will leak sound, may bother others in the room and you'll hear back ground noise, like your phone ringing. Closed cans are just the opposite.

Do you want these to be semi portable? Or you just using them in the house?

if you are considering use with your ipod then perhaps IEM phones might be of interest for portability sake. many people on this forum are Shure fans, but personally I own 2 Etymotic Research phones (ER-6 and ER-4p) and both have been excellent on my iRiver H320 and Cowon iAudio X5L playing 192kb vbr ogg files.

Why would you recommend staying away from Noise cancelling? Just curious. Also, I mostly play CS:S, HL2, some WoW, and will definately get Crisis when it comes out. I really dont want any IEM phones. I have a decent pair, and honestly just dont like that style all that much. And, i wont be using them with my iPod all that much. I meant just when I'm maybe in my living room or something, not to just walk around with, so portability is not too much of an issue here (although i still dont want like 10lbs holding down my head)
