Dual-Booting Guides for XP/Vista/Linux

Bookmarked: thanks tons, that'll really save some time, bud...

Prog: definitely start a new thread as soon as you get your box, please, since you're going to be the first 'normal citizen' to be cranking this sh!t (Zyb's alright, sure, but he's got 'connections' within Dell, and seems to have a pre-production box with 2.4 proc instead of the 2.8...also, he's rocking Vista-only and with no reformat, as mentioned earlier). I can hardly wait to see the oc'd numbers in XP...I also wonder if there will be any REAL difference between XP and Vista with this setup (at least, on the games that Vista WORKS at all)?

Edit: Oh, shoot, just noticed the 'stock' config has a 2.4 proc as well...anyhow, it'll still be good to see Vista vs. XP on Bioshock and stuff...also, if you can give numbers from the OC of the graphics boards, you would be our god! The proc OC will likely make little difference in games, anyway, though it may cause numbers in other apps to shoot up (i.e encoding/ripping/extracting/content creation software, etc.), though these pale in importance compared to gaming numbers, of course!

Edit 2: Got it yet? Got it yet? Got it yet? Got it yet? Lol...are you at work or something?

Back to the forum after a long time.

I recieved my XPS 1730 last tuesday (bought it on Sunday Oct 30). Two days was the delivery time (impressive).
Last week, was a huge pain at work, I had no time to play with this beast until Saturday. It took a full 2 days to reinstall Vista and XP. SATA was causing problems. I had to slipstream my XP Cd with the SATA drivers.

Just loaded Bioshock, GRAW2 (got it with the rig).
I will let you know the benchmarks as soon as possible

why does the 1730 use 667mhz RAM instead of 800mhz RAM on the mobile extreme processor..

Santa Rosa (the chipset) only supports 800MHz FSB and 667MHz ram.

Note, however, that the RAM is dual channel, which means it is (theoretically) capable of saturating a 1333MHz bus (667x2)...
This doesn't happen in practice, but the difference between 667 and 800MHz ram with an 800MHz FSB is very low nonetheless...

mobile platforms in general do not support high sped ram because it uses substantially more power for very small performace gains.
i didnt think the RAM speed double when its dual channel...
it's not that the ram speed doubles.... each module is still at 667... but the aggregate speed is effectively 1333...

it's like 2 highways with a 667 speed limit will get twice as many cars through as a single highway... though all the cars are going the same speed as before... there's just more of em.

2007-10-09 23:28:07 - Bioshock (1440x900) (Full GFX Settings) Frames: 2996 - Time: 66040ms - Avg: 45.366 - Min: 35 - Max: 66 Could you please do some OC'ing on that badboy and post the benchmarks? Your M1730 should be knee-deep in my E1705's ass. More apparent at higher resolutions maybe?

My screen does not wobble at all. Its built super sturdy...super nice!

I really like this machine. Going from vista back to XP is like going from 0-60 MPH.

I cant over clock with the dell vid drivers and I cannot find any drivers that will pop thsi baby in sli. I downloaded some off laptopvid2go and it lables my vid card as a single 8800m GT lol and my 3dmark 06 score was only 4300...

HMM I wanna over clock this but cant successfully seem to.

All I have to say is that it is bullshit there isn't more support. You paid good money for that rig.

I have to run 3DM'06 in 1440x900 as well. I was talking more about real-world FRAPS (or equivalent) benchmarks. I'm pretty sure your rig scores quite a few more 3D Marks than mine. I'll bench it here in a minute and get back to you, but I'm sure it doesn't even break 6K at 1440x900.

I ran my rig @1440x900 and got 4826, when I get my t7200 hopefully It will increase better framerates for gaming.

i am very curious to see other benchmarks of the m1730.

Here it is at 1440x900. Would be nice to get some FRAPS benchmarks if you get a minute. Bioshock in particular.
that sounds about right.

i am still sceptical abou the dual 8700 scores....
