Hey guys, I am about to jump the gun and get the M1730 over the Sager 5791 because of the SLI. The only thing that is holding me back is the idea that I might able to get one of those Dell coupon codes. Those are so hard to come by for the XPS.

So what do you guys think, is it gonna be available between now and Thanksgiving or Xmas ?
if you can wait as long as christmas, you shuold be able to got an 8800m rather than the 8700m... (Which will boil down to a 2-3x improvement in performance....) so I'd recommend waiting.
2-3x performance as in the power of the cards or a noticeable increase over the 8700m? could you give a percentage of performance you gain on the 8800? what type of fps performance will increase by waiting for the 8800 over getting the 8700 now? also if there any hard evidence that the 8800 deffinitely be coming out at christmas?

Cheers..
Nick

On the Alienware site they had a new Laptop with dual 8800M GTX's as a configure option. Of course after all the buzz they pulled that link. My understanding is that it will be available on the 17th of November. I would assume that since DELL owns Alienware that the SLI 8800M GTX's with be the promised upgrade option for the XPS 1730. Especially since the robust cooling and extra watts available from the brick.

Waiting to pull the trigger.

ah ok i see, which means the 8700m will be stock and you will have to pay extra for the 8800m which would be most likely $500 aud or so lol..

This could help ake the transition to 800MHz RAM for laptops in the future.

what does an 800MHz FBDIMM (only use on 2 and 4 socket intel workstation/server boards) have to do with 800MHz laptop memory?

With the slow FSB of laptops, there's no advantage to faster ram anyway. From everything I've heard, laptops won't get 800MHz memory until the Montevina chipset which will also make the transition from ddr2 to ddr3. Montevina will have a 1067MHz FSB which would still not be saturated by dual channel 667MHz DDR2. The only reason to go with the 800MHz DDR3 is for reduced power consumption anyway.
The reason that memory in laptops has remained @ 667 MHz is due in part to the power consumption of 800MHz chips. The article outlines the development of lower power modules that operate at 800MHz with no degradation of performance.

This is what it has to do with laptops....And FYI how is the FSB of the newer laptops slow? They operate at 800MHz, which is fine. It's not like they are still sititng at 533MHz
post #171 of 328
Laptop FSBs are slow in comparison to desktops... 667 and 800MHz vs. 1333 and 1600MHz. I'm not trying to say that their performance is particularly worsened by this; in real world applications it makes very little difference thanks to the huge l2 caches intel chips have these days. 800MHz ram at 1.5 volts isn't especially new, quimoda has been sampling it since 06. http://www.qimonda.com/about/press/r...0606_006e.html

The article you linked to is certainly interesting news in that it's going to dramatically increase intel's performace/watt figures in 2 and 4s systems since the older FBDIMMS were using substanitally more power just sitting there than the processor was while active.

Anyway, lower power stuff that's faster is always good in my book. I guess the reason I questioned your link had more to do with why it was in the "***OFFICIAL*** M1730 news thread" than anything else...

Does anyone know for sure whether or not 8800M is going to be released on the M1730? And which version? GTX, GTS, 512mb, 256mb.. thanks.. would love upgrading these 8700s
post #176 of 328
Yes there will be one. I would expect to see them sometime in Jan.

Nope they don't have any 17" XPS systems on there. They do have a couple M1710s in their Outlet store though.
