Anyone have Nextel/Sprint?

I've had AT&T as long as I have owned a cell phone, so what I know about other carriers is only what friends have told me, and they all have Verizon. Please advise me on Sprint/Nextel, using the handy dandy numbered list of general questions below. I will be changing or renewing my phone plan in a couple months, and will have two other people on the plan.

1. Coverage: Great, okay, nonexistent? I live in LA county; my parents, who will also be on the plan, live in Nor Cal in a rural neighborhood. Their reception under Cingular is hit and miss outside of city limits.

2. How costly are the plans compared to other carriers? We're paying around $70 a month for something like 700 minutes and 200 text right now. However, I plan on getting a smartphone, so data will need to be part of the plan. I will be using the phone for e-mail and possibly IM on a fairly regular basis.

3. How's the support/customer service?

4. Also, wtf, is Nextel completely part of Sprint now, or does it matter at all which one I specify, because the website always says Sprint either way but the address bar is either or. Are the plans and CS going to be the same either way?

I know that #2 is easiest for me to research myself, but if anyone knows how to best go about getting the lowest price beyond ordering everything online, advise would be much appreciated.

I have sprint, I love it, coverage is as good as verizon or any other sometimes they have service, sometimes they don't, sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.

Customer service has been good to me, had to call twice and no issues so far.

Nextel if i'm not mistaken is the old sprint, so the people on that plan are really pissssssssssy....Sprints pretty good if you go with the SERO plan, its 1250 anytime minutes unlimited web/ unlimited pic/text/video messages and nights start at 7pm.

Nyako Nextel Sprint Blows for our area. (last I had them. X-wife sister and husband have it and hate it) Cingular or Verzion are the best with T-moblie, Helio, and Sprint/Nextel being the lesser choices.

Nextel was bought out by Sprint and the old Nextel network is slowly being turned off and replaced with the new Sprint Network. I had Sprint for about a year and it was the crappiest cell phone service I have ever had. This was in MI though. When I got back to SoCal my phone had little to no coverage.

Sprint is in the process of absorbing Nextel. They are taking what they want from Nextel (Push to Talk 'PTT') and absorbing that into their cell equipment. Coverage areas are rather good in my area but again that could be hit or miss. The Nextel Customer Service has always been exemplary where for me the Sprint Customer service has always been poor. They are integrating the customer service groups and hopefully they will put the Nextel folks in charge as they have a grasp of what customer service means. I'm in charge of alot of phones and data packages in the Central Texas area and for the most part we are able to access it everywhere. which smartphone you looking at getting?

everyone needs to realize that in different parts of the country, service is way different..

on the east coast Verizon dominates the market...service is impeccable ...

my gf has sprint and service is okay... drops calls all the time...

I agree with you Duke. That is why I am saying in the area Nyako and me live Sprint/Nextel Blows.

Whatever you do don't get anything with the Nextel iDen technology. It's a dying breed and looks as though Sprint isn't going to do ANYTHING to expand iDen coverage.

However, I like my MotoQ and Sprint's customer service has been for the most part easy to deal with. I was with Nextel for over 2 years before I migrated my account to Sprint. I actually liked the voice quality on my iDen handsets, but hated the extremely limited coverage.

Love Nextel left Sprint for them because Sprint's customer service sucks, now that Sprint has bought Nextel hopefully they will pickup Nextel's customer service which has always been superior. Sprint has a bad habit of just dropping customers and services with little recourse (kinda like M$). They've started offering Hybrid phones that carry Sprint's cell service and Nextel's PTT (push to talk).
