Thanks, chief. Hugs are always appreciated
Just got back just now from dinner w/ the boss. A bit of a turn-around, so life's not terrible. Sager hasn't been banned from the workplace. Just my
Sager. The 8790, if it ever runs again, won't be pulling work duty unless it's to fill in when the New Boy in Town (whatever that ends up being) breaks down.
Boss asked me what I planned on doing (ie- what am I going to replace the 8790 with) and I wasn't quite sure what to tell him. He even asked about the next model up from the 8790 (color me shocked at this point). Apparently he doesn't care if it's Sager, Fujitsu, Sony or a Wobbly jibble-bobber from the Martian Best Buy; he just wants me on a functional machine- one, preferably, that can be serviced in Japan if/when the time comes.
So, there's my hitch. I can
opt for a Sager if I so choose. However, service is an issue (as it definitely
is now- shipping's a beast from abroad). I can also opt for a different brand in the US (I've got the Sony BX570 on my brain and I'll be in the States in 9 days for 2 wks). His thinking is that if I buy Sony or Fujitsu or Toshiba, I can get it serviced in Japan. 8 years ago, when I was living in Osaka, I'd bought a Fujitsu on that very same premise. Motherboard went and no one would so much as touch it. American computer they said- needs to be serviced in America. And so it was.
That being the case, things are sticky. I'll be calling Sony Monday and seeing if they'll deal w/ an "American" computer. If so, then that'll probably seal the deal. The lack of support for Sager here is a major minus at this point. However, depending on how the service on my 8790 works out, I might still push for Sager. The 5720 looks like a good machine. Am I willing to go with another untested machine? Never said I was the smart horse to bet on.
So at this point, I'm stressing the data recovery while somewhat relieved that the boss's working with me on this. So there's good and bad. I've got 9 days to decide. At that point, my plane leaves for Seattle. 9 days. Hopefully I can get my HD cleaned out by that point, too.
