But, for the moment, happy thoughts... think happy thoughts
Remember, only use the stock video card drivers.... don't upgrade them AT ALL.

Back home now. 2am here, so I won't be opening it up anytime soon. Gotta get up @ 6:30am for woik. I've never used Omega drivers and last time, the video drivers were stock from the factory up until they told me to try updating them when the artifacting went haywire.

At one point in my travels (not Seattle), I was picking up 2 different signals from houses at least 100 yards from where I was at. Impressive.
Am I reading it right that you bought the machine in the US (or, at least, from Dell's US website)? What did Dell tell you about US warranties in Japan? I am also in the market for a 9300 (to be purchased in NA). A Dell rep told me that the warranty basically follows the machine - so if I buy in the US and return to Japan, and the machine subsequetly breaks, I can get it serviced in Japan. I couldn't find a clear answer on the Dell website and unless 3-4 reps say the same thing, I tend to treat their words as "probably" rather than "definitely" right.

Ignore this question if you bought in Japan.

Dell warranty service
I have first-hand information on Dell warranty support here in Japan regarding a US-bought machine. An engineer from the US was visiting my plant a few months ago and he also had a Dell 17" notebook. Morning of the day he was leaving (from here in Hokkaido), his notebook was dead. Wouldn't turn on. He called support that day (not sure which number he used) and they met him in Tochigi (N. of Tokyo) the next day and had his computer fixed. To me, that's very impressive. And it was a big selling point for my boss when the decision was made that I was to get a work-only computer since the 8790 had shown itself to be unreliable.

Well, hard to tell, Syn. The day after it arrived in Seattle @ my friend's house, I arrived and opened it long enough to check it out. I was temporarily shocked as I read the invoice: it said 5720 on it. But then realized that they'd put someone else's invoice in my box Pulled my machine out and turned it on; Came right up and wanted to have XP set up. It was late and I'd just been stuck in traffic (7 hrs to make a 2 hr trip- rockslide closed I-90 in WA), so I put it back in its box and went to bed. Next day I was flying to Japan, so no chance there. Got home @ 2am the next day, so didn't get it opened then. Yesterday, fell asleep when I got home after work (jet lag) and then the same thing last night. I was going to try to get it set up last night after work, but by the time I get home, I've just been dead.

Went shopping yesterday and didn't even end up getting what I went for Got home and got so far as putting the milk, eggs and bread away. Everything else is still sitting on the kitchen floor.

So... hopefully today I'll have a lil more energy. I want to get it up and running and see how it runs now w/ new video RAM.

Personally, I'd rather see it up and running correctly.

Up and Running
Got XP set up yesterday after work. Haven't gotten too much installed. So far, seems to be running fine, however. Off on a work trip this weekend, so not sure if I'll have time to mess w/ it.

next time your 8790 dies try the new clock speeds that inconel is trying to put together in a vbios

good luck

Next time it "dies," it'll be far too late for Inconel's work, IMO. Besides, when/if that happens, I'll be calling Sager long distance and airing out my thoughts on the situation rather than trying to band-aid a known hardware issue.

I have been in contact w/ Inconel, however, so I'm aware of his efforts in trying to limit the problems that many of us are experiencing.
