I am back but still just to ask a few questions

Thread Starter
Good to see the site is still going strong. Any enemies I made last time I was here, looking for some help with notebook questions, and are excited to get into "pushing me around" again, you might want to consider someone else. However, I can take it. However, I like constructive criticisms and I love to learn.

But my questions are about a new MacBookPro that I have and have had for about 2 weeks. I have never used a Mac so it is very frustrating but I think it will turn out A-OK soon. My questions are as follows (just so you know, if you want to be mean, put my questions down, or do something to try and "hurt" me, I think you should look elsewhere but that is totally your decision. It really does not affect me in any negative way)

The questions are:
Try to keep in mind, I have never used an Apple computer in my life. It is a long story about how I ended up with this notebook, but after having and using for about a week each, I sent the Sony vaio, Dell XPS (I cannot remember the exact models, sorry) and the Lenovo ThinkPad t61 a5" back to the manufacturers, but I do have some specific questions.

1. I have read, watched, read, posted in other forums, watched some more and still do not understand how to set-up the extreme base station. all I have now is 3 computers I want to allow them all to be wireless, use my stereo to play iTunes, and see if I can get m all-in-one printer connected to the Station so all the computers can use the same printer? I am good at some things but I even have some trouble with windowzzz stuff but I never thought I would feel this lost again. I know I need to just work with it but having to have it for work and it replaces a work computer makes things super hard under pressure. It is frustrating when I think I have something and I find out it is just trial and the days are running out. It is interesting apple let's us find out that we need to purchase later after you have used it. For example, although the new iLife '08 was out before they "made my computer," as apple worded it, they installed iLife '07. But someone who does not know what they are doing finds all the applications and does not see "iLife" or "iWork", which I paid for pre installed. They list the programs that make up these broader names. I did not know that so I was calling apple telling them I do not have these installed and I paid for it... man after spending over $4000 with the notebook and a few accessories you would think most of these applications would have come with the computer but I guess those days are over.

2. I really need a basic class to use a MBP. It is like learning a foreign language--I feel that lost. I really think it will all work out and I will like it one day, but getting through this trial period is adding years...

3. Any suggestions on where to get good ram so I can take out the 2 sticks of 1 GB ram and purchase 2 sticks of 2 GB. I really need it now I have Fusion going and a couple more windowzzz programs to install. Somebody told me I would be able to get a rebate, whatever they meant by that but I need good, dependable, high quality ram, I amount even sure if there is a difference.

4. I also need to get rid of this neoprene sleeve called encase. The 2 zippers scratch the side of the notebook when I insert it in. I would also like a backpack or some bag for active people that can deal with the ac adapter, programs, headset, etc.
5. anybody know if it is usual to close the notebook and have it just latch in the middle and the 2 front corners kind of "pop out" a little o the connection when the notebook is closed and latched it is not a good seal. Just wondering if this is a normal thing for Mac books or macbookpros?

Thanks for any help. Smart-a** people and mean people, save it or some one else cause it will just get trashed by me and not affect me.

God's Peace to you.

quite apple specific queries - u might want to ask if the mod would move this thread to the apple sections, u might get better/more feedbacks

cheers ...

"the mod" is obliging that way

@Kooler, I don't know the answers to most of your questions (as I don't own a Mac), but you can get 2GB memory modules from a few places. I'd recommend going to Crucial's website (www.crucial.com) and use their system scanner or memory advisor tools to tell you which memory will work for your system. Then you can either purchase from Crucial directly or price compare at several online and local retailers.

I got a 2*512MB kit of Corsair for my MacBook and they work great. I got them on NewEgg.

1:iLife is composed of
iTunes
iPhoto
iDVD
iMovie
GarageBand

All those applications should be on your computer in the Applications folder.

iWork 06 is composed of
Pages
Keynote
and new in iWork 08
Numbers

Those should be in the iWork folder of your Applications folder

2: What exactly are you needing help with?

3: I covered that one

4: I use an old Dell laptop bag for my MacBook, its huge so it lets me carry anything i need

5: Ok, when you talk about it closing.... i guess you mean it looks sort of like it is bowed? So the latches are latched, but the corners are not flush with the palmrest right? I think you should be fine so long as it is uniform... I personally never was fond of the MacBook Pro latching scheme, I think they should switch to magnets like on the MacBook.

In as far as the airport extreme base station...

If you open up finder, click on Applications, and in there you will find a folder named Utilities. In that folder you should find a program called "Airport Utility" That is where you will make all changes to the setup of the base station. I am not at my house at the moment to be able to walk you through more in-depth, but from the sounds of it, you want a basic setup where DHCP is enabled for your laptops.

In as far as a bag, I use a Brenthavan, and have been very happy with it. In my particular case I find it provides much better protection than most bags do(This is probably the 7th or 8th "laptop" bag I have gone through). I bike in to school and work a fair amount, but don't take it mountain biking or anything like that

In as far as RAM< go to Crucial's website, and if you don't order from them, it will at least give you all the information you need to know in order to order the correct RAM.

And yea I am not a big fan of how Apple organizes their "Applications" folder, and because of how they set up their system updates, if you either don't install something they expect, or move it to provide a bit more sanity, it screws with the system update, so you really should leave it where it is unfortunately. Beyond that though I believe TheStu covered your points on what suite consists of what, so if oyu ahve more questions feel free to ask.

The easiest way to share music w/ iTunes is to have your music located on one drive or system. Then you just set up iTunes to not import (copy) your music into the iTunes library and set up the designated drive on the network as your iTunes library. Set up all your computers in a similar way and you're all set. The only way it might get complicated is if you purchase some music via iTunes, which typically gets stored in the actual iTunes folder. But, if you're main music folder is your iTunes folder, then you should be able to play purchased music on any of your computers, so long as they are activated with your iTunes account. All of the computers should be able to use the all-in-one printer if it's plugged into the base station. The easiest way to configure them if your other systems are windows based, is to install Bonjour on them and use the wizard. Your only limitation here is that your scanning functions might be limited or unavailable in a networked setup. So if your computer next to the AIO Printer is networked to it, then the scanning/faxing might be moot via the computer.

Usually in this sort of situation Apple ships the new version of iLife on Disk. This might also be the case with iWork if you paid for it. If not, call Apple and get the stuff you paid for.

All of the iLife links should be right there on your dock (on the bottom of your screen). All of your applications are installed in your, um, applications folder to which you have a link from each and every Finder window you open.

If you have an Apple store nearby see if you can schedule some classes.

Newegg, Zipzoomfly, Google, (insert website of memory maker here). Rebates and sales will vary from place to place. I check in on places like Dealram, Techbargains, and Dealmac every now and again to see what's out there.

Not sure what you're asking for here. If you want to get rid of it throw it in the trash, burn it, ebay it, wear it as a hat, take your pick. If you want a new one check them out at your computer or Apple store of choice so you can see how the interior and the zipper looks. The same goes for a backpack or bag. Your best bet is to try and find one you can actually put your hands on and see how it all fits together. e.g.- ones at a store.

Are the contact pads around the screen touching the palm rest area? Or is it simply a case where the the bow is facing down toward the center of the palm rest because the latch point is lower than the space created by the pads being in contact w/ the outer edges of the screen? The latter would be normal, the prior would be an undue amount of bowing of the actual screen chassis.
