recovery/bootup help needed

Thread Starter
i have been trying to fix my friends laptop for a week or so now using the recovery discs which came with the laptop. if any other info is needed btw i can get it.

basically i startup the comp using the discs already in the cd drive. first thing it says is something failed and i have to press f2 to resume.

next the bios comes up, if i try change anythin or select anything other than escape and discard changes then the screen asking which of 4 options to choose.
1) ms-dos with cd-rom support
2)recovery full hdd
3)recover to 1 partition
4 recover to 2 partition

only 1 really works here the others start working but then say recovery not finished and stays there with a:\> waiting for me to type in some commands which im not sure of. i tried smartdrv commands but i don know which i need to use but they are the only ones that seemed to work as far as i know.

sry about the not exact error messages along the way i will update them tomorrow when i have more time.

asus m6000

first error on a screen with american megatrends. "primary master gard disc error, press f2 to resume"

press f2 then bios comes up, past bios get to ms windows startup menu with 4 optinos
1)ms-dos with cdrom support
2)recovre xp to first partition only
3)recover xp to entire hd
4)recover xp to entre hd with 2 partition

at botom says f5 for safe mode, shift +f5 for cmd prompt.

when i choose choice 1 it loads lots of data then stop and shows A:\> and waitin for me to type something in. only smartdrv seems to have any effect

when choosing option 3 the copm starts and a light blue screen like the normal loading one shows up briefly and then runs data. but after a few seconds sayd "recovery not finish, please try again"

thx for any help its very appreciated i dont really understand asus that well

drivers are only good after an OS is being installed. drivers are not for recovering a bad drive (if that is the case)

cheers ...
