Upgrading the 8600 CPU

post #1 of 50
Thread Starter
I recent bought an outlet 8600 with the Centrino 1.4ghz CPU with the 9600 and 512meg RAM. I have seen the 1.7ghz's going fairly cheaply on ebay and am considering the upgrade.

I have seen various guides opening the 8600 up to get to fix the keyboard, and also the video card upgrade by DELL-Machina. Nothing I have seen however has touched upon the CPU. So on the basis of having built many desktops in the past and having a good knowledge of the working of computers, will i experience any difficulty changing the CPU? Is it just a straight swap for the 1.7ghz? Has anyone done this and had any results to share? I really wouldnt think twice if this was a desktop, but as its my first notebook I have no idea

well the 855 socket only supports pentium M 's which only go up to a 1.7 gig. if you have a 1.4 you can get a 1.7 and drop it in. The new Dothan 400 mhx front side bus versions are comign in may and will be supported by the current socket soo putting one in shouldnt be a problem but if you want the new 533 front side bus i guess you would have to get a new motherboard or new laptop : (

So that mean they going to make two versions of this processor one the runs at 400 and other one the runs at 533. anyway what are the speeds on that i want to get a new processor but i want to upgrade to something that is wroth it. like i dotn want to grade from 1.3 to 1.7 i feel like there isnt going to be any diff but if i get a 2ghz then i think that is a diff i the new Dothan going to go up to 2ghz or what. let me know. and where would i get one can u ebay it?

well okay the 400 mhz fsb are gonna be 1.8-2.0 ghz and are coming may 9th, the 533 fsb are 1.8- 2.13 and are coming around september. now if you are going from 1.3- 1.7 it will be alot cheaper. you are getting 400 mhz and it will be alot cheaper since the new proccesors are probably gonna be very expensive at first and not worth the extra 100-200 mhz

just my .02

Im not really interested in the new processers, i have a desktop for games You make it sound like it drops in. If this is the case I have no problem swapping them over as it should be no harder than the desktop equivalent. Could anyone please confirm this is the case?

well check out this site this should be able to help you on ur question

I would wait before upgrading until we know if the 400MHz FSB Dothans are going to be compatible. They are going to start at 1.8GHz and supposedly go up to 2.0GHz (the 400Mz model that is). If they are compatible then that would be the way to go, with a 2MB 2nd level cache these are gonna smoke!

Just to let u know that my friend got both dothan 1.8g ES and QS, and they're both working on his ASUS M5, a P-M laptop. I do beleive that dothan coming out this May can apply on 8600, but Dell has to provide us with BIOS support. he works in asus.

Wow, thats great to know! Thanks for the info, gives some of us hope for a possible upgrade to 2GHz Dothan, I'm salivating here

I will stay with my p-m 1.4 and like two more years later I'll get a dothan (2.2g? ) on eBay for like 20 bucks.

I also had a Celeron 500 laptop and I upgraded it to p-650 for 15 bucks 6 months ago, shipping included. c-500 and p-650 was like 400 bucks difference when i bought it.

Thats' an idea, probably what I'll do too....... but the 2GHz will be the highest the i8600 can take I believe (if it can take any), because that is the highest clockspeed the Dothans will be made in with a 400MHz FSB, past that they will use a 533MHz FSB which will definately be incompatible.

I have a feeling dell wont even come out with Driver for us people witht he 8600 to support the new processor. just a feeling. they really want people to stop looking at the 8600 in my opinion.HOPE NOT CUZ I HAVE A 1.3Ghz. From 1.3Ghz to 2.0Ghz i think that is a great of an advantage for me. a 700mhz increase would be lovely
post #13 of 50
There shouldn't be any "driver" problem. If its to work its an issue of chipset compatibility (c'mon Intel, don't let us down) and perhaps BIOS recognition, but I suspect that so long as the chipset supports it this is not much of an issue (as evidenced IANOU's post, where they were working on an ASUS obviously without specific BIOS support for it).

and that ASUS must be using the same chipset we do.....

another success,
http://www.mobile01.com/topicdetail.php?f=159&t=23345

I know that u might not be able to read chinese but just look at the pics;
someone replace his p-m 1.5g 1mb with a dothan 1.6g, and his NEC laptop is intel 855pm based.

He also metioned that~
1. the dothan is much cooler since the cpu fan running lesser
2. new benchmark is able to compete with xp2700

Considering a 1.5M isn't far off an XP2700 anyway.....I'm not too impressed. I ran AIDA memory read and got 2430 as a result, running tons of crap in the background. Will need to see more benchmarking real-world results before I'm a Dothan convert. Don't forget the Extreme Edition P4s with 2mb l2 cache aren't impressive either..

Not sure what I'm expecting to see with the 2mb P-M processors other than reduced heat..., which isn't bad in the first place! My CPU was running at 29C when I woke up this morning. (system on all night)

never seen windows in and asian language

Cool but where are the benchmarks. like processor speed and thing like that game benchmarks

you have to remember that P4EE was an almost emergency edition, since AMD was taking all the market share with its 64's, so out of no where came P4EE [intel had to run for the buck], while dothan is had a lot of planning, and i dont think is fair to do that comparation

p4 : p4EE :: banias : dothan - NOT!!!

The P4 EE didn't come out of nowhere. It's a Xeon that's been renamed for the desktop market (and clocked a little higher).

Yeah, we'll have to wait and see some numbers. Good news though, 2 laptops now with Banias CPU's and supporting chipsets have taken a Dothan, so its looking good for us. Now if only there were a mobile NV40, wishful thinking I know, but still..............
