Weird performance issues in vista on m1710

My m1710 is still very new, and has some performance issues doing the simple standard desktop stuff. I have never had these issues on any other computer and they can be very annoying. The first is that firefox takes about a minuet to open, and that can be very frustrating. The second is that windows media player takes 10-15 seconds to switch songs. There are a lot of similar issues relating to slow performance on the desktop, but when it gets to games, game performance is just as it should be. All of these issues are consistent, and I'm wondering if vista isnt prefetching correctly? I have already formated and installed just the stuff I need.

another Issue I am having is the sound crackles sometimes.

my specs

core 2 duo 2.33ghz, 2gb of ddr2 ram @ 667mhz, nvidia geforce go 7950gtx, and a 7200rpm hard drive

Drop Windows Media Player and download Winamp. Winamp is much faster and in my opinion a much better looking media player. I don't use Firefox so I can't help you there.

On your laptop speakers or output through a Large stereo? Are you using the wav out plugin? If so change it to Direct Sound

Through the laptop speakers, Windows Media Player doesn't have the ability to switch output plugins, and on winamp, it doesn't make much of a noticeable difference. The issue with winamp, is that it doesn't have the bass boost that windows media player has. But either way, that doesn't solve the fact that windows media player can take 10 seconds to change a song, which doesn't happen on much much older computers.

Have you raised the sound level of your built in subwoofer on your Laptop?

yeah, its all the way up, I don't need help getting sound settings set right, I need help making this insanely powerful laptop more responsive at the desktop level. Its pathetic how long I have to wait to switch songs or to open a web browser (Internet explorer does not have that long lag). Right now, to do the simple tasks like using the internet, listening to music, typing up papers ect. I'm better off using nearly any other computer then this one.

Well Windows media Player was slow as a dog on my XPS as well. It's not a problem with your system or vista. It's the programs you are choosing to use. I just choose not to use WMP cause it's so slow on my system. Perhaps someone else will chime in with more help.

See, I don't see that being true, I'm using the same programs as I was using on my old sager 9750, and the only hardware differences was the processor on that was an amd64 x2 2.2ghz and the ram was ddr running at 400mhz (and that ram still performed better then my current ddr2 ram) Im using the same hard drive that I had on that computer, just a fresh install of vista. And it had the 7800gtx in it for the graphics card. All the software I have installed aside from the drivers, is the same. And that kinda makes me think that dell's hardware is shit.
