Not so cheap

lol looks like there are a few problems with your evalue code configuration.

Nice machine, but $3000 for a notebook that will perform on par with an SLI 7900GS setup? Granted the DX10 support, but i think I'll wait for an 8800+ setup :-)

I think on par with a 7900GS SLi setup is a bit over the top.

How do you mean? Everything I've read about the 8700GT is that it is similar in power & speed to a 7900GS. Granted, I haven't been able to play with an 8700 first hand. What have you guys heard?

128 bit memory bus

The similarity stops at 3DMark scores, which aren't indicative of anything anymore. It'll pull good numbers in a synthetic benchmark - but will fall flat on its face in most new games.

as of right now the 8700sli setup is not worth it......../thread

supposedly from what i've read... the dual 128bit pipe is comparable to the 7950 256bit...
everything that I've read states that the video card is basically a end to a mean to get out dx10cards. they over produced the 8700's...
nothing really takes advantage of dx10, so its going to be difficult to accurately measure how well it performs in the real world, but results have not been too favorable on the 8700gt

hello m8 how are you?

well, when it comes to 8700GT SLI vs. 7950gtx or 7900GS SLI, things are quite simple... on lower resolutions they might be equal, 8700gt may even be quicker. But go to higher resolutions, or turn AA on and 8700GT comes to its knees!
Now, anyone that buys XPS notebook expects to run it with eye candy (high res, AA, AF) so I think Dell shot itself in the foot here

Yea somebody already posted the 1730s page via an e-value code. Still no sign of it otherwise.

-Just noticed OPs also from Dublin, same Dell, same Speed Test Sig about the same no of posts.. weeeird.

I just finished a Dell XPS chat about this. They are only offering one setup... no options for now. They will be offering options at later dates. Sounds like they have a rollout configuration they feel comfortable with from testing.

That may be why the e-value codes aren't working.

Unless you have other links: http://configure.us.dell.com/dellsto...=DYCWM91&s=dhs You can't change anything. It's a set system. According to the Dell rep, they will be offering a faster chip, Vista Ultimate, more memory, blu-ray, 802.11n cards, etc., but later

Update from Dell rep:

$2999 pre-launch "ready to ship" system. These are pre-built configurations that will ship overnight to customers after two days of processing = 3 days total.

9/27: Full launch - Findall content on the XPS M1730 on dell.com along with fully configurable systems. Public launch begins with an announcement at Digital Life in NYC.

Why would they put the 8700 in a laptop? They would have been much better off putting them on a desktop board and selling them retail. The 8600GTS is a disgrace, it is slower than the 6600GT FFS. The "mobile" 8700 would have not only creamed the 6600 and the 7600, it would have also been cooler, and more energy efficient than those chips, and at the same time it would have also had a ton of overclocking headroom.
