It's the most powerful 8 series mobile card available, that is why. As far as dropping it in a desktop, I really don't see the logic behind that unless you are looking to build a mini pc
post #22 of 86
it would have been better if they put (2) 512 8700M 's in totalling 1024 that wouldn't be too bad
post #23 of 86
512MB Dual NVIDIA® GeForce® 8700M GT with NVIDIA® SLI®

I think they did.

Someone said that the reason why they were using them instead of 8800s is because they produced too many of them. If that were the case, it would be a lot better to sell it as a mainstream desktop card than as a high end laptop card. I think the real reason is just MS forcing dell to use dx10 cards so people will start using vista instead of xp.
Is there a notebook 8800? nVidia's site only shows a 8700M (mobile)

http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_8700m.html
post #27 of 86
Or you know, it could also be because there is no such thing as a mobile 8800 chip for them to use. If such a thing existed, you know Dell would have been all over it. Instead, they needed to refresh their lineup now so they used exactly what they were given.

1. Too many? err that's a new one... You honestly think they woud sit on 8800's if they had them? ...Sorry the 8800m is not even available yet. 2. MS forcing Dell? err... Nah more likely Dell is just putting out the newest hardware available.
But its not the best hardware available. Midrange cards cant do 1920x1200.

And I didn't say they had too many 8700s, someone else did.

Dell shows 2560x1600 for the 8700M SLI. They are showing 2x256MB configuration, only. I emailed the Dell rep to see if they will offer 2x512MB.

the price is actualy not that bad, its already configured with 2 gigs ram, Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7700, dual 8700 sli, 200gb hdd, when they have the options available it will start cheaper, probably.
Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7700 is a Santa Rosa with 800FSB, Intel's newest notebook chip.

Does anyone know if the LCD screen has LED backlighting like the M1330?
I agree with all people who say it's better to wait for a 8800 to surface. 8700's in SLI is a nice setup, however, the 128 bit memory bus is a big bottleneck nowadays.

Ok what is the best available DX10 mobile hardware if it isn't the 8700m?

Yeah, it's not Dell's fault that all they got is the 8700m. Dell doesn't make GPUs. Blame nVidia for spending too much money on those ads preceding your games and other marketing, and not spending enough on R&D.
estimated, how many fps will 8700sli have in css, does anyone know?

Lol, yeah, they are so far behind on their R&D, there 1 year old card still holds the title of King.

Well they definitely are the king of rigged benchmarks lol... I love Nvidia but they don't do as well with video editing (esp when dealing with noise filters) as ATI cards. The whole (latest) rigged benchmark fiasco that they thied to get away with really irked me... If they put a little more R&D into mobile systems it would be nice!

Dont know much about about video editing in general and what not, didnt know they were behind ATI in that area though. Didnt know anything about the rigged benchmark fiasco, got a link? As far as RD going into mobile stuff, the G80 mobile part situation i think is just simply physics putting its foot down. The cooling solution for a mobile G80 would be so absurd, the chip absolutely needs a die shrink before it can be "mobile", which i think is was G9x will be the next true high end mobile chip. I think 8700m is it for the 8 series as far as mobility. I also think were going to see a high end mobile DX10 chip very soon though.
