Who cares about dx10 if you cant even play games at native resolution? And ya, to get the 7800/7900gtx they had to do a die shrink on the desktop versions. The 7800 series was pretty cool on the dekstop though, the 8800s are monsters. If they refine the architecture a bit and release an 8900 they might be able to clock it down and make a mobile version out of it that is the same speed as the desktop 8800. Otherwise, it will probably have to be 9x for an architecture cool enough to fit in a laptop.

Not true. There were no die shrinks for either. 78xx are 110nm, 79xx are 90nm, for both desktop and laptop. Not happening. nVidia has already confirmed G92 will be released in November and will have over 1 teraflop of power. No sense in investing in an "old" tech. G80 has 525 gigaflops or so, for comparison, Ultra is about 576 gigaflops. Right on the money. A mobile G80 would have to defy physics to fit in current laptop chassis's.

G70 is 78xx, G71 is 79xx., G70 mobile is also 110nm, G71 mobile is 90nm. Dont believe me if you like, but once you actually do the research youll see for yourself.

both the 7800gtx desktop and mobile cards were 110nm.

its not that I didn't believe you, I just remember reading somewhere that it was on 90nm. This was 2 years ago though.

Yeah memory does not get doubled with SLI either. GPU memory is only mirrored. If you have 2x256mb cards in SLI, your memory is still limited to 256, and still only 1 128bit bus, in the 8700m case. Dont let Dell fool you. Anyone know why the memory cant be "striped", sort of similar to a RAID array? That would be a huge plus for SLI.

The fact is, people are buying into the BS that both Dell and M$ want you to believe.

The whole "higher number = has to be better" crap. The fact of the matter is, the 8700M is NOT a legitimate successor to the Go 7950 GTX. Period. End of story. Put it to rest. Unless you sit around and play 3DMark all day, the 8700M IS slower than the Go 7950 GTX.

Besides, this f00kin laptop is FUGLY. Everyone should do themselves a favor and wait until NVIDIA releases a G9x mobile part, and Dell refreshes their XPS lineup again when its release, and hang on to your M1710s/E1705s.

Something tells me Gx9 will be available in the XPS 1730. Source = my gut though. So who knows.

What a mess I would guees yes Dell would feel obligated to give 1730 owners the option for a decent card down the road! For that kind of cash....

Not to mention in my opinion for a highend gaming laptop the 1730 leaves much to be desired yes for one with the BS many are buying into with the video card kind reminds me when one gets a turbo catch or LE behind a videocard ........Then it is like what the heck the way they made it out it should crunch all the newer games but why am im geting like 16 FPS!!!!!!

Then the fact the first Laptop with the Ageia Physx comon don't buy into that crap too it isnt worth the powder to blow it up. Even in a desktop its a wast of a slot on your board.

For that kind of cash to shell out it by far to me in my opinion is a downgrade from the 1710 XPS with 7950 GTX or 7900 GTX for that matter.

Looking at the past of Dell gaming laptops all of which I have owned the upgrade path never goes past 1 video upgrade.

All should know that in the past Dell offered at least 1 video card upgrade and for me their would be know way I would even consider the 1730 with the current GPU option as the cards will not be cheap to upgrade this go round either.

Just my 2 pennies worth.

Hell, I gave my 9300 a hug. This thick, ugly, overpriced laptops got nothing on mine.

If tradition holds, if NVIDIA releases a GeForce 9800M card, Dell will release a new laptop. Dell updates laptops with new gen NVIDIA cards. It MAY be offered as an upgrade, but Dell will still release an updated laptop as well. Look at the XPS Gen2 -> M170 thing. The Gen2 got the upgrade to the 7800 GTX, but Dell still released the "updated" M170 with the 7800 GTX.

Yes true but Dell always tries to give one upgrade and yes I think that was a crappy tactic Dell pulled with the XPS Gen 2 / M170 releaseing a videocard upgrade from nvidia and renameing the XPS Gen 2 a M170 and on top of that not offering the 7800 GTX as a upgrade in spare parts to XPS Gen 2 owners until they pushed the M 170 sales for a pretty long time if I remember right. Then decided to throw us loyal Dell customers a bone the 7800 GTX when they were good and ready after they pushed the M170 sales. If you buy Dell it's love hate relationship. And they are about the Almighty $$$$$ more then their loyal customers. But still can't beat their warranty if a competor could I would be buying from them.
