i dont like the fact that you cant change any of the computer components on the laptop. I would think people would want a bigger hard drive than a 200 Gig.... and dual 8700 cards dont even compare to dual 7950 cards...

Why not make it both? I'm giving mine a hug now, other than the X1400 part, which will no longer be an issue as i ordered a 7950gtx last night....can't wait until it arrives!!!

x1400 to a 7950? May I suggest you strap yourself into your seat so you don't get blown away?

Try searching for the m1730 on the Dell website and you get this:

Quote:
Looking for XPS M1730? - Home & Home Office
We are sorry! The product you are looking for is not yet launched
Please have a look at XPS M2010 which is the latest equivalent to the XPS M1730

Perhaps Dell has already resigned to the fact that the m1730's closer to the m2010 than m1710, that it's more a multimedia/light-moderate gaming machine than a strong gaming machine.

Full launch for the M1730 starts 9/27/07. There is only a special link for pre-launch sales: http://www.dell.com/content/products...=19&l=en&s=dhs Searches probably won't show the M1730 until sometime today at launch.

Here's the link. It's now available for customization (except for the $3000 version). I built a few just to see the pices. I came up w/ $5775 for normal setup w/ minor upgrades such as faster cpu and such, $7425 to add a solid state drive, and (drumroll please) $11,903 to max it out, all software, and all peripherals (like gaming pads, flight yoke/controls, etc.) That's right, for the price of a 2008 Kia Rio you can own your very own Dell M1730! Have fun!!

To accommodate all these hardware options, this machine is big. It's thick too, and that's because the NVIDIA 8700M GT card can be swapped out for the next-generation SLI card later this year.
nice... but your warrenty would still only be covered on the 8700's though kinda teh suck
post #71 of 86
No graphics card options.

Wow, those solid state drives are pricey!
I noticed they still left the M1710 on the site, along with the M1730

Guess dell knows not everyone will be running after the new XPS Laptop
post #73 of 86
nothing in canada yet either. I am very curious as to where they set the pricing now that our dollar's are equal. If they jack it up like the other laptops. reguardless I am passing till I see a better video option
post #74 of 86
damn it where is the canadian ones? :s
by the wats the difference between
<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=center width=22></TD><TD vAlign=center noWrap align=left></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Video Card

512MB3 Dual NVIDIA® GeForce® 8700M GT with NVIDIA® SLI®

Dell more then likely has a abundunt amount of 1710 you can beleive one thing that as soon as stock drops a little they will pull the 1710 to force people to buy the 1730.

The fact still remains the same that the GPU option on the 1730 holds this machine back and Dell knows that also.

You can almost bet that the next highend GPU that nVidia releases will be a beast and will fit into the 1730.

Also you know when Dell releases a new machine the price is high and with this one has a good bit of upgrades besides real Audio and GPU.

I would honestly say if it had a better GPU and decent audio card and the price wasnt crazy off the hook.........I think I could get past the looks of that ugly beast another thing to consider is because of the weak GPU option is the life expectancy of this high doller machine will take a hit as in my opinion and shooting from the hip going by Dells past it will see only one more GPU upgrade.

Processor , Hardrive and DVD drive (buue ray) are decent upgrades but the fact of the matter that Dell has half A$$ed this gaming laptop and left out 2 very important features Audio which Dell has been sliping in my opinion for years and GPU which is important.

What makes a gaming machine is a combination of highend hardware components in todays day and age not just a GPU but one without the others at a premium price is like pi$$ing in the wind in my opinion when ya shell out that kinda cash.
as I said in another post somewhere lol they should have swapped out that Physics card for a sound card... I would suggest ppl wait for the dual 8800's before jumping into the 8700 boat...

I can just hear the screams of ppl after they bought the 8700 & the 8800 comes out "just in time for Christmas" lol
post #78 of 86
Finally it's out haha I bet they're running short on stock lol I still see the 1710 for sale o.O

Tom's Hardware:

Dell XPS m1730 "Smoke" Laptop
The "m" stands for massive rather than mobile. The 17" Dell m1730 runs with a 2.8ghz Core 2 Extreme X7900 and nVidia GeForce 8700M GT SLI.
