Dell's Infamous "InProduction" Status.... Question? - Page 11

Hey... I can see your point RoofusX. BUT... we are all assuming that the boys at Dell really update the 'status' of a notebook build accurately during it's manufacture. Believe me, having worked in various service oriented companies the stage at which a service or product maybe at isn't always reflected in what the customer sees or hears if they enquire.

Yes, CS told me the 'HOLD' was off and the 9100 are shipping again. That was Saturday. I figure they have all the notebook orders lined up on an assembly line going through various stages of production. They can stop production on one or all of the notebooks for various reasons. I was told the latest 'HOLD' was due to a video issue and they wanted to runs tests to confirm the issue was resolved.

I guess my point is this, don't read too much into the status of the order and hold Dell to it as I believe it isn't a true reflection of what is happening there. This would explain how people's notebooks are 'In-Production' one day and then 'In-Transit' the next. I don't think your notebook was 'slapped' together. Have faith, mate.

All this being said, Dell might want to rethink the way they keep customers 'informed' of the status of purchases as it can cause unnecessary them frustration.

SD.

SilkDawg, your point is well taken. I can see where everyone jumps the gun so to speak. But think of it this way.. We buy from dell as a home user and get told many different things during the life cycle of our order, but at the same time if you are able to order as a small business your order is processed and shipped in no time. I can say that from experience, as my company orders through dell on occassion and we have ordered and received the order with the same week. Example. we ordered 3 laptops all 8600's and all the same specs. The order was processed, built and shipped with 4 days.. Why is that same level of service not available to the home users (as they make up most of dells customer base!?!?!?!)

Simple answer to that Systematic is the product lifecyles are different. Not to mention timing is everything. Haha. I guess the release of the 9100's hasn't been as smooth as Dell would have liked. Not sure what else to say, but I think I put forward some good points that people should consider before blowing a fuse and canceling orders or bad mouthing a company when things don't go exactly to plan.

Maybe we will see how 'forgiving' I will be as my first personal experience with Dell unfolds. I am officially all paid up and hopefully moving into the Production stage.

Fingers crossed.

I would be interested in seeing a breakdown of dell's revenues as a percentage of home sales versus business sales. I would wager that the bulk of the money is made through corporate sales and therefore they will take care of the businesses a lot better. Pure speculation on my part however

My computer shipped around 10:30pm sunday night....several hours ahead of schedule of its mon 26th shipping date.
At 7:30pm it was still in the "build" stage supposedly.
Let us hope that SilkDawg is correct and that the updates online and on the phone were incorrect and they did not throw my machine together in 3 hrs!

It has been shipped!! Man... that was fast! Paid in full one day and shipped the next. That would mean my PC would have been put together and tested in a matter of hours!!

I'm betting they have all these machines lined up ready to go. A small component change here and there and boom... out the door!! Very impressive!

Now I have to wait to see the screen type.

Dell i9100 replacement arrived today. Everything looks in order, slight bright bleeding on bottom of screen. But both monitors did this and my pops 8600 does this, so I guess it is to be expected. About to do fresh install as soon as drivers finish downloading. I'll update later this weekend.

still in "in production" anyone lese having slow 8600 build times? My original 8600 was built at the speed of light.

I ordered mine on 4-30, it shipped on 5-5 and i got it on 5-7, I was impessed at the speed they sent it out. Thanks to all o this board who convinced me to get it. BTW I have WSXGA+ samsung and the screen looks perfect - no dead pixels. Only problem is that it is 3am and I am still playing with it!
