Dell's Infamous "InProduction" Status.... Question? - Page 4

I bought an I8600 bout 3 months ago and when it arrived here in Virginia it said right on the front MADE IN MALAYSIA. I would have preferred TN but the system worked and did not have any problems.... Yeah, considering TN is a wee-bit closer to VA I was surprised that it was made in Malaysia... Strange, Strange!

mmm.. makes you wonder why these things take so long to get here...Wouldn't Dell be saving a whole bunch of money if they shipped them closer to where the order was placed? ... Then again, it must be worth outsourcing the job all the way to the other side of the planet.. Or maybe it depends on which model you order.. too many unknowns regarding the production logistics of dell

You aren't kidding... Moderator, what gives???? Any ideas on this halfway across the planet dell building system, or is it really boil down to cheaper labor costs? Just curious, not trying to bash...
Thanks,
J

I guess this was eventually expected since its vastly cheaper to pay workers a cushy 5 figure salary who only have to work 60 hours a week rather than pay a whole group of people pretty much the same total pay and more hours. We COULD discuss the pros and cons of outsorcing but were not lets just assume malaysians make one great dell laptop as they do Intel CPUs shall we?

According to this ,Dell manufactures its computer systems in six locations: Austin, Texas; Nashville, Tenn.; Eldorado do Sul, Brazil (Americas); Limerick, Ireland (Europe, Middle East and Africa); Penang, Malaysia (Asia Pacific and Japan) and Xiamen, China (China).

In addition to that, I also remembered while talking to a customer rep in India that Dell has customer service locations in India, Ireland, Tennesse and Indonesia.

No real complaints here, my I8600 had no flaws when I received it, and dell did not charge me 2nd day air from Malaysia, that would have been pricey, so if outsourcing saves us all money... Kudos to dell!!!

Thanks,
J

Good point DM. Intel CPUs are built in Malaysia, most hard drives are built in Singapore, etc. If the components can be built in the south pacific without any problems, the systems should be able to be assembled there without trouble.

After all, building a computer isn't all that hard - even I can do it

I believe the cpu's are made in Malaysia and are shipped to assembly plants in Tn, and other locations. Hence the made in Malaysia sticker on the boxes. When mine was ordered it was shown in boxing to pick up in Nashville Tn, in a manner of three days. Then was shipped ups and received by me the next day. I ordered on the 22nd of Feb and recieved it on the 26th of Feb.

Well I have finally seen movement on my IXPS... Today I finally moved from KITTING to BUILD and stuck now in TESTING all since noon today. I cannot believe that finally after 9 cancelations, ordering, returning, and reordering since 01/26/2004 I may actually be getting my IXPS sometime soon. What a ride....
AWESOME!!!!!

I've been stuck in boxing since yesterday... maybe they have a shortage of cardboard or something?

jresurf, I feel bad for you. Especially since yours went into build before mine and I received mine today.

My original ship date was 4/21 and I get it on 4/13 - now that is awesome. It took five days from testing to in my hands, so you should be very close. Best of luck.

FYI the web page never updated with tracking info, but the phone order status system gave me the tracking info almost immediately.

Finally my 9100 has moved into testing today...I had ordered on Apr/7

Boxing in the case of laptops includes shipping from Malaysia to Tennesee - so it's on a slow boat from China

To be honest with you SLOTHER I do not think the BUILD stage is exactly defined very well. For instance I ordered a DESKTOP last night for my father in law and it went into "InProduction - Build Stage" via web status within 2 hours. Mine which has been sitting in the build stage for almost a week now, I think was probably finished some other time. Essentially, I do not think the BUILD stage is properly defined. But honestly I do not care, as long as it is on its way sometime soon I say here are some bannanas:

What shipping method did you get SLOTHER?
Thanks
J

Yeah, but since there are no common sayings "slow boat to Malaysia...."
maybe it will be common now

I got "free shipping" and so wasn't able to pick anything other than 3-5 business days. As it was, it was more like 1 business day - it shipped on Saturday (4/10) and was received today.

BTW, there are a significant number of ethnic Chinese in Malaysia, so the slow boat saying is still legit.
