My XPSM1330 won't hold video settings

I don't know if this is a hardware or a Vista problem, but here it goes.

I use my 1330 mainly with an external LCD monitor - ViewSonic VA1912wb. I keep setting the display setting for the external monitor as the main monitor with a resolution of 1440x900. This worked well with my Vaio under windows XP. With the XPS running Vista, each time I boot up the settings revert back to 1280x800. I've tried everything but haven't found a way to lock the settings.

Any suggestions, or where to go for help, would be most appreciated. It's not a huge problem, just an annoyance.

PS - I posted this on the Dell p2p Tech forum before I learned of this one.

I am curious to learn why a different driver would fix my problem since I'm not doing anything (gaming, etc.) that demands a revved-up driver.

vista:
i used the Fn key to force the vga ouput to the external ONLY. then i corrected the resolution on my external via the control panel. after that, it will stay the same each time i restart

cheers ...
