Ok so today I was in the library just surfin the net when... Suddenly my screen turns off and thats it. The power lights are still on and i can hear the fan motor but that's about all. I pressed the power button and turned it off and when i try to restart the computer turns on, the fan whirs, but asside from that nothing else happens! no information appears on the screen not even system bio's. Im scared.... all my stuff is on that computer... anyone have an idea what the problem could be? I really hope it's not my HD cuz that would really suck!

is your battery fully charged? Do you have the AC adapter plugged in?

Usually you are able to hear the hard drive spin up on boot-up. But that still does not solve your problem, even with a bad hard drive the computer should still POST (white text on black background).

Loose connection between the LCD and motherboard? Very strange since you did not move the laptop in any way..

Ok. So now I got my laptop working agian. But it still has problems. My computer still freezes when touched the wrong way. I found out that if i press down on the keyboard firmly that i can usually get it to start up again. Then after a while the computer freezes up again, sometimes the screen goes blank, other time it just shimmers.
Well in any case I'm thinking that there's a loose connection somewhere in the system. Took the keyboard out this morning, fiddled with all the plugs... installed a bit of AL foil but that didnt seem to help. Im not sure but it appears that there are some electrical burns from static or something that arced from the keypad to the casing. wish i could post a photo of it... It could just be dirt and wear marks though. in any case I'm pretty sure it's not my HD's problem, so I'm at least thankfull for that. Wish I had the cash to buy another t40, even a broken one which i could swap parts with.

Take it apart again and clean it really well, and pay attention to how you put it back together. If I had photographs I could explain better but I'm thinking you have a loose ground connection somewhere.

Actually it is a pretty comon T40 problem. My friend bought a T41 and has the same problem. When you press the keyboard to hard it freezes. After a lot of surfing we found out that it's a problem with the video chip. It's a contact error. You might be able to fix it by taking apart the laptop but I'm not sure. He is sending his back for service.
If you need a manual go to http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkWiki and look there.
Good luck!

I read more into the problem and yes your right it's a loose graphics chip. taped a spring between my keyboard and gpu useing double sided tape. Now i can actually pick up the laptop without any crashes. Seems to be working. Only time will tell if this is a perminent solution. Im considering buying a heat gun and reflowing the solder onto the graphics chip.

I had the same problem with my old Thinkpad T21. I looked on ebay for a inverter and I found one for around $25.00 and replaced it. When I powered the T21 the display came back up.....
