There's a boatload of refurbs of all varieties up at Apple's online store. Some older, some newer, but a broader variety than what I've seen in the past. Get 'em if you want 'em. :-)

My choice if I had the $...

Refurbished MacBook 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - Black
13.3-inch glossy widescreen display
1GB memory
120GB hard drive
6x SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Built-in iSight camera

$1049

Got a iMac G5 off display(Not refurb). The DVD drive went out in about a year and a half. That is about it. Might be worth getting applecare on, but beyond that you can get some good deals.

Depends on what you get, in general the price listed in the same category as the refurb you buy is correct.

So if you look at Refurbished 15" MacBook Pro, the last item is always an Applecare plan, that is the price of a 3 year warranty on it.

If you get a laptop at all, the applecare is probably a good idea. If you get a refurb, it depends on the situation. For instance I did not get one for my iMac, but then again losing the drive on it really isn't a big deal to me because of how I use it.

the nice things about Apple's refurbs is that they're covered by a 1 year warranty, just like a new one.

I've always found the following store to have prices competitive with Apple's academic pricing for Applecare. you have to pay shipping, but it's also tax free if you don't live in California.
