M1730 GFX - Dell offering Upgrade program when 8800M is Released

Thread Starter
I read a few sites today that said that Dell will be offering a upgrade program for those that buy the M1730 prior to the release of the Mobile 8800.

Sweet news

First, no one really knows if the 8800 will even be released. Second, I'll believe an official upgrade path when I see it. Dell has tried to offer an upgrade program before and never went through with it....

yup yup, don't expect to see it out within 30-45 days though, that'd still be within Dells return policy and they'd take a huge hit for it. Only thing that sucks about this is that your new gfxcard would not be covered under your underlying warrenty, it'd be covered under the manufacture's warrenty or so Dell told me.. I'd expect something around xmas...

What is the Game Panel LCD by Logitech can someone explain this to me or show me a pic of it? I'm thinking it's like that G keyboard. But I don't know....

Dell's return policy is 21 days, IF they offered an upgrade you would have to purchase it through Dell as it is system specific; therefore, it would most definitely be covered under the original warranty.

That's certainly very interesting. I hope Dell follows up on this unlike in the past where companies claimed to have upgradeable graphics but never fully implemented it. It may not mention a 8800 but anything high-end GPU in the future is bound to be better than the 8700GT and it's wimpy 128bit.

It probably wont' be relased or it'll be the 8800 GTX instead of the 8800M. Or like the 8850.

Well, a friend of mine talked with XPS reps today, and according to them, no upgrade plan will be offered (take it with a grain of salt, but interesting).

Second, I highly doubt there will be an 8800M part, or at least one that's worth a crap. I'm more inclined to believe that there will be a G9x mobile part, as the thermal and power requirements/restrictions for the G8x are just too high to create a worthwhile mobile part. Even if NVIDIA DID release one, it'd still be way underpowered and no match for a GeForce Go 7950 GTX.

Sounds like the left hand has no idea what the right hand is doing.

I suppose so. So far I'm asking different reps and it's been 3-0 so far on the yes. Plus, it was on an established news wire on yahoo so I figure they'd get their info right.

Semantically, you're asking the wrong question. You question assumes they will release an upgrade. If they never release an upgrade, then technically, he isn't lying. You need to ask: 1. Will Dell release an upgrade to the 8700? 2. If so, will I be allowed to upgrade and still be under warranty?

Dell will probably do something similar to the Gen 1 XPS. Buy it now with the lower video card and get the newer one when it comes out Customers with a Gen 1 XPS and a Radeon 9700 could upgrade later on to the 9800 when it was released.

However, weather or not nVidia has the silicon ready is another story.

BTW, parts purchased directly from Dell with a valid order number carry the balance of the system warranty. Get your upgraded video card from Dell and as long as you have the order # you're good as far as warranty.

The answer they gave for the first is that they don't know. The second, they said it would be under whatever warranty you have since you are shipping the laptop back to them for installation.

All of what will be said is assumption, but I believe at the point an 8800 or 9 series laptop card is released, it will surely be more powerful than the 7950GTX. I could be wrong, but it just makes sense. A high end card from the new series should most certainly be more powerful.

I wonder if they would allow you to upgrade it yourself & keep the warranty. . .

You're forgetting the power and heat requirements for the 8-Series. It's a RIDICULOUS amount higher than the 7-Series. Thus my assumption. Many others have posted about this, so I know I'm not the only one who thinks it.
