That was an official Dell press release carried by dozens of "news wires". This isn't reporting, or quoting... it's a reprint of an official Dell press release: the kind designed to inform investors, the industry, and the world at large on official Dell policies. Having issued a number of these on behalf of my employer, these are not things you say and don't mean. They're 'official'. Of course, they can renege on anything, at which point, people who bought that 'lie' can wave the thing in their face and call shenanigans.

I think the machine was designed to cope with the hotter GPUs. The 8700GT SLI will likely not push the cooling capabilities to the limit, where the faster more powerful card may. Maybe that's part of the delay: this machine is going to be in their line for a while, and had better cope with at least 1 or 2 generations of GPU.

I kinda have to agree for one weather it is the 8800m or 9800 or whatever nVidias next beast is. The 1730 if you look at the bottom has vents that go compleatly across the whole laptop and I do beleive that Dell has done their homework and designed the 1730 to have adaquit cooling and not to mention the 240 watt powerbrick to feed the upcoming beast. Dell has advertized both of the above better cooling design and more power. I guess we will see in time whenever this beast of a card is released.

It's funny how it always feels like something better might never come out, and we hit the top. Good thing we've been proven wrong 1,434,982,101,493 times! And counting.

Will Dell make the next video card incompatible with the 1730? Unlikely. It's their latest XPS, whatever comes out in terms of GPUs has to fit it, unless they start shipping out 1730s with a different BIOS and we all know how the tech public responds to that!

Or they could stop giving a shit about our niche market and let us simmer in mediocrity. Oh, they've already done that.

well the new 8800GT desktop card kinda fits the bill of billing a cooler, more energy efficient version of the 8800GTS and 8800GTX cards... Nivida could very well adapt a lowerclocked version of the 8800GT for mobile use.

True, the 6800 Ultra was hot as crap, if they can stick that in a laptop even a hot stove is game.

guys just to butt in for a tick, i'm looking at buying the M7130, it says on their web-site that it is a Dual 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8700M GT graphics with NVIDIA SLI Technology. Is that different to what you guys are talking about with the 8700m or are the ones you are talking about support the dual cards? as you can see i'm a bit confused.. I kinda want to get this sorted out before i go and spend $4800 on a laptop that may be a bit of a let-down..

Also.. Dell are only offering the Vista 32bit version which would make the 4gig of ram pointless as vista 32bit only supports up to 3.1gig or something similar. In that case it would be more of a benefit to go xp pro over vista for the moment until they release a 64bit version?

thanks for your comments in advance.

Cheers
Nick

Alot of people are dissapointed with the overall performance of the 8700m as compared to dual 7950's. Nevertheless if you really want DX 10 for whatever reason it's not a bad way to go. It's just that i think for nearly 5 grand alot of people feel that a 8800 something should be given to them at that price.
