Vostro 1500 DIMM Replacement Question

I need to access the DIMM under my keyboard in my Vostro 1500... The guide says I need to remove the keyboard, but I can still leave it connected to the DIMM-A cover connector... I was looking at some forum user-made guides and they completely disconnected the keyboard connector from the laptop to access DIMM-A... Should I remove the keyboard connector (or is it really so fragile I should leave it alone if I can?)

Also to lift the hinge of the front panel, I am planning to use a plastic toothpick - is that a good idea?

Hi,
My name is Rick and I am part of Dells online community team.
The ribbon cable on the keyboard is pretty sturdy. I have taken many of these apart and it is quite easy, once you have the keyboard up an can see where the ribbon connects to the motherboard you should see that there is a plastic lip that lifts up releasing the ribbon part from where it is being held.
After that you have good access to the memory slot.

Using a plastic toothpick shouldn't be necessary, but if you have large hands and short fingernails it may help you get under the latch.

Thanks for responding Rick... BTW - is it possible to remove the DIMM-A cover even with the keyboard connector still attached? From the Dell Manual - it says I don't need to remove the connector if I access DIMM-A...

Crellion, I just went down to our lab and took apart a 1500. You do not have to remove the ribbon connector to access DIMM-A, I have grown so accustom to taking it out that I hadn't even tried accessing the RAM without doing so. If you have any further questions, just let me know. Rick

I successfully added my new DIMM to the DIMM-A slot, however one thing I noticed was that when I tried to put the keyboard back into place - it was slightly propped up near the LCD-side before I screwed them back into place... It went down as I screwed the two top keyboard screws in place, but this sort of made me wonder if this was normal or not....

Rick again,
So long as the keyboard is flush after it is screwed down, and the keys feel good I wouldn't worry about it. The keyboards are built with a little bit of flexibility so that they are more easily installed. Just make sure that you got all the bits of the keyboard that are supposed to be under the plastic sitting right and you should be fine.

If you are concerned about it, take a pic or let me know in a little more detail what is going on and I will gladly give you my 2 cents.
Rick

Thanks Rick just what I needed to reconfirm... Yep, the keyboard is screwed down with the front panel back in place and the keys feels pretty solid to me... I guess I'm a go... Thanks for your help
