problems running encrypted programs. {5680}

post #1 of 4

I need to use a program from work that's encrypted,the MIS dept. gave me an unlock key from a set a #'s {hardware fingerprint} that my 5680 gave when they installed the program.from what I understand the fingerprint from the 5680 is generated from the O/S,the HD,and a few other things.

the problem is,that the 5680 keeps giving different hardware fingerprints ??.
thus the program won't open and asks for a new key ??

my old desktop {p3 gig} works with this program no problem,I seem to be the only one with a p4 running this program.{trying to run this program}
Does hyper-threading change anything ??.
not sure why this is happening ,but I really need to use this program on the fly instead of at home.

wish it was simple enough to just turn something off within the settings.
their telling me I should have bought the Dell they suggested.....

any ideas as to why this may be happening ?

Having two CPUs might be causing it to misbehave. If it starts on one CPU and the next time starts on the other, the internally generated checksums might be different and cause the behavior described. Might contact the maker of the software. The CPU, might be included in the hardware inventory.

the 5680 uses 2 cpu's ??,I didn't know that,is is 2 separate chips ??
how would I describe this to them.

Another possibility might be the network card MAC Address. This is a common way to get these hardware fingerprints. The problem is you can have more than one network card, including: internal wireless, internal wired, bluetooth, IEEE1394 firewire. If you use a PCMCIA wireless card, that would contribute as well. Depending on the how the fingerprint is created, it may only use active (connected) network cards, which would further complicate matters.

See if there's a way to restrict/control how the fingerprint is created. That might be your best bet.

5680s only have 1 cpu, but hyperthreading makes it look like 2. I'm skeptical that this would be an issue though. It's not like you are switching between hyperthreading and non-hyperthreading, and the CPU itself will have a fixed id.
