Heat issues with XPS Gen 2 - IK9FANGUI?

My mate's XPS Gen 2 w/ 7800GTX is experiencing issues in games - tearing and random black textures in GRAW 2, overheating => shutting down, and stuttering in Far Cry. We've tried different drivers to no avail, and after running Rthdribl for five minutes according to RivaTuner the GPU reaches 100c...so I'm thinking it's overheating.

So to the crux of the question...where on earth has IK9FanGUI gone? I was planning to use it to run the fans higher for some better cooling...but alas, I can't find it anywhere and the official site is down. Any ideas?

Have you blown out the HS fins & the fans? If they are clogged it will not matter how fast you run the fans.

GPU reaches 100c? Holey Moley.

I suggest you open up the laptop and remove the mattress of dust inside there.
A lot of people use I8KFanGUI, and that works for me.

a $5 tube of Artic Silver 5, and reduce your over clock a little

fear got the max temps for mine, but i cant remember it stopping even when leveled out at 103deg C max Going from memory here but the threads are on the site somewhere

far cry shouldn't be taxing your system at all. My clocks right now are 440/1150 w/ same card type, and never over heat/shutdown with that clock (for this card)

fangui18 works great, think 19 had a memory leak.......anyone else remember? lol

As with the others above...

Clean those fans ASAP before you end up looking for a new computer

And while it's open replace the Thermal compound

Ordered a new air duster, so I'll be blowing that through the intakes as soon as I get it. Would love to take it apart and reapply the TIM but after doing it at least five times when it was mine half the screws are f*cked and I reckon I'll need a drill, so that's probably out. Will see what I can do.

some on dell forums say you can overspeed the fans using compressed air, and to jam them prior to blowing

never did do that myself........of course ive had them replaced due to bearing wear........maybe whoops, maybe just a time thing

That will do absolutely nothing. Your gonna have to open it up and remove the fans. This is the only way to get to the blanket of dust clogging up the fins on the heatsink. Blowing air through the intakes is a waste

you don't need to remove the fans, but you need to remove the palmrest assembly, that will give you access to blow everything out the right way.

Blowing air in, will blow a little dust out, but it will force the majority of it deeper into the system, causing even more heat issues.

The fans are installed right up against the fins on the heatsink. How else can you remove the dust? If your going through the trouble of removing the palmrest why half ass it. There are only 2 screws that hold the fans in.

I've opened up machines more than a few times and have applied AS5 to the CPU/GPU, as well as done other mods, etc, but I am pretty sure you do not have to remove the fans to blow them out. I will grab one of my pics and post it.

edit: Here is a pic from one of my teardowns.

Now if you want to take the extra step to remove it you can, but it isn't a necessary step for cleaning the fans out.
