just picked up a ZV5000 and it keeps resetting the bios so i can only imagine the cmos battery is dead. I had the whole thing apart and cant seem to find it. where is it normally? is it supposed to be soldered on, or does it plug in somewhere?

thanks.

I recommend you download the service manual from HP; it should tell you whre it is located. Be careful tough when you change it; I have personally damadged the battery holder trying to get the old battery out in a Compaq in my old laptop.

exactly what I'm doing now. I have yet to etract the motherboard. The manuals either omit the cmos location or it tells of a different location than on my machine. I will be back when I find it. Once I opened the case I was in deep.

OKAY i GOT IT. You get to it from under the keyboard of the computer. It is located, probably under some tape, near the wireless card. To the left and up. It is soldered on and you have to unsolder it and resolder the new one.

Ouch! I remember some Toshiba has this soldered-on battery. Can be a pain sometimes.

Nice going.

HP Pavillion ZV5000 CMOS battery alert

I was just talking to my hardware instructor at my college. He warned me that if you try to unsolder the old CMOS battery it will explode. So DO NOT unsolder the battery. He is talking about the older kind of soldered battery. The kind ZV5000 has is pictured below and it can be soldered. Whew.

what if the battery needs replacing?

consulted with my professor, he thinks you are right about diagnosing a dead battery because of the BIOS. He says you can get a new battery that plugs into the board. It sounds very complicated. You have to be careful where you cut the wires ......I will get a more thorough answer during our break

Good luck with the test!

Yep, pretty "standard" on many brands/models. Easy to break off during soldering.

I was wrong about the battery being under the mother board, it is in fact under the keyboard. To get the strip off ( theplastic part that has the quick start buttons and power buttons ) you have to unscrew the screws on the underside along the edge there first becasue they hold the strip down. Once you unscrew those four screws, the strip can be lifted off. then uncrew the keyboard carefully lift it because there is a cable attached. You can release the zif connector and pull out the cable to put it aside. The wireless card is there with some tape over the battery.
Sorry if I confused you before, I was working on a different thing under the mb. ; }
The ziff connector has two little tabs on each side of the cable that you push up to release the cable. If you need pictures I will take some for you.
