G4 ibook fix / upgrade

Thread Starter
So obviously i am not a mac guy, and when it comes to fixing them, especially laptops, i want to shoot myself in the left eyeball.

anyway...some of you (kakaze) might remember that i have a friend who is stuck with a very craptacular G4 ibook (don't remember exact version..i wanna say A1208 or something like that). In the last few years the mobo died...just about annually. Once even the hdd and ram also got swapped. Anyway, that thing is a lemon, but thats another story. Her bro gave her a Sony Vaio (PM 1.6, 512mb ram, 80gb 4200rpm) ... and that thing is a DOG. She wants her ibook back.

I went to the apple store w/ her to get it tested, dude confirmed that indeed the mobo is busted and would run $300 for a fix. Of course he recommended just selling it on ebay for $100 "as is" and dropping $1k on a macbook. My friend doesn't really want to go that route b/c its $600 more money and she won't really benefit that much from the improved performance (read: office and internet doesn't need much anything). So she is still considering fixing (maybe even slightly upgrading) the mac. Of course that would involve a bigger/faster hdd, more ram.... and a replacement motherboard.

Here is the question: are G4 ibook motherboards interchangeable between models. That is, she has a 12", so as long as i get any other 12" ' s mobo, would it fit? This is also crucial for an upgrade b/c this way i can get a mobo w/ a faster CPU than what she currently has...

All the images I have seen of iBook logic boards (I am in a similar situation actually) they all look the exact same in terms of screw placement, heatsink size, and ports, so I think it would be safe to go with a 1GHz+ iBook Logic board to give her a healthy boost. Drop a 512MB chip in there and you will have a fairly decent older machine.

I have to go with the guy at the Apple store...buy a new one.

Considering all the problems she's had, what good is it going to be to replace the motherboard if you'll just have to replace it again?

Sometimes you just have to move on. It's going to be a bit more money but with the way the internet is going she's going to be missing out on a lot of sites with her old iBook and that's going to keep changing as sites become more and more flash and java intensive.

If you must replace the motherboard, however, it would probably be best to get one from the same model as hers just to be sure you have 100 percent compatibility. The motherboards might have the same shape and screw positions but there's no guarantee the chips are in the same places or the cooling system isn't different, etc.

Sounds to me like the recurring problem would be too tedious to deal with by staying with the older computer. You can get some pretty good deals on current macbooks for a few hundred more, like you said, and have a newer laptop under warranty to use. If you keep trying to repair the older one it may be just as expensive to keep repairing it.

Yeah, kinda like an old car. You have to ask how much $ you're willing to spend if things continue to go wrong and then decide if a new one would be worth it. Off topic but my first new car that I leased was the best decision I ever made. I went through the whole, "Do I fix it or go for the new one?"-and took the plunge on making the down payment and making the monthly payments. Long story short, the peace of mind was well worth every penny.

The same went for my iBook. I've had a great experience w/ my machine and have been happy I took the chance on upgrading from my old Compaq. The only time I've had buyer's remorse is when I coached a friend through his MacBook purchase and saw what he had compared to my iBook. If she's gonna buy new and she can wait just a bit, I'd be curious to see if there will be any product refreshes or updates when Leopard is released.

abf, how about refurb macbooks? That would be a great way to save a few hundred bucks to fit her needs.
