Best Notebook Pc for School/Home Needs?

I need help finding a good notebook for my basic college/home needs. My budget is $400 US all suggestions would be appreciated. Both Used/Refurbished Laptops and New Laptops should be considered, as long as they are fully operational and suit the needs of a College Freshman Majoring in Computer Science.

Around the 14" - 16" margin preferably

a used IBM Thinkpad T-series system might do reasonably well for you. They are really built to last (i have a T23 and 5 or so years later its still awesome and gets used regularly). Replacement parts (you will probably need new battery for starters, maybe more ram) are abundant and reasonably cheap...so you won't have the issues of tracking down replacement parts should anything go wrong.

Any Idea where i could find a reasonably priced Thinkpad in good condition?

Also what is your opinion on a Compaq Presario Notebook? Im thinking i may be able to stretch my budget a bit because the Presario looks very attractive indeed and at around $600 with features comparable to $1,000 notebooks...

I also use a t23 for school stuff and internet and it's doing well.
Try ebay for a used laptop. There are many online stores that sell refurbished laptops with warranty.

Yea I'm gonna try to use Ebay now, thanks for the suggestion, i was trying to avoid it, because i had a overly paranoid view of the number of scammers on ebay.

You can try other online stores as well but since I'm not fro the US I'm not familiar with those ones. I know ebay because it has European part as well.
