M1330 Sim card slot

Alright, so I was playing with my computer and I noticed that in the battery compartment, there is a compartment for something that looked like a sim card, so I busted out the user manual (for the first time) and looked it up, and sure enough it's a slot for a sim card.

Anyway, I'm wondering what that slot does, which I'm probably guessing mobile broadband? HSDPA/EVDO?

Does anyone here actually use the sim card slot, and is there something special you need or can you just go to a local AT&T store and buy a sim card with HSDPA?

sim card is if you have a gsm (cingular, att) broadband card.
Does not work if you have cdma (sprint/verizon).

Yeah, the SIM socket only works for those GSM broadband cards. Doesn't even interface with the PC directly. I tried my Nextel SIM in my D820.

Thinkin about it haha, hard to justify the $59 a year cost when my whole school campus is wireless :P

I'm thinking about using the slot for Intel Turbo Memory. Only thing that's stopping me is that I'm not sure how much of improvement it will bring.

uhhh. $59/month.
And it's totally NOT worth it if you spend most of your time in a wireless environment... I spend a ton of time commuting outside wireless, so it's totally worth it.

You know you can just use Treo's DUN for free right?

actually, a good point.
If you have a sprint phone, you can tether it through bluetooth as a modem.
Depending on what phone you have, you can hack it so you odn't have to pay the PAM (phone as modem) plan. Check sprintusers.com for details.

isnt bluetooth slow? o.O

evdo is slower, so it doesn't matter.

oO lol well that definately puts things in perspective haha :P. What kind of speed would I expect from evdo anyway?
I think EVDO bursts at like 384kbps. It's slightly faster than 56k, more like the old dual channel ISDN Lines which were roughly 128kbps. Better than nothing when you're on the road though.

evdo reva is pretty fast. I don't know the numbers, but I have it internally on m 1330. I'll be honest.. if I'm web browsing, accessing the company intranet, orjust checking email, it is indistinguishable from wireless.

When downloading, the speed difference is more noticable, but it stil isn't that bad. I downloaded a 25 meg file yesterday in just under 8 minutes.

So, if you don't have access to a wifi signal, and are on the road a lot (I sit on a train every day for 1.5 hours, each way) then evdo is TOTALLY worth the $50/month.

IF you have access to wifi, or don't travel a lot, don't bother. AND, with wimax coming out soon...

To put evdo in contex, opn cnet bandwidth tester I get 373.3 kbps. AT bandwitspeedtest.com, I got 621.3 bps. With my wireless rev-n card in my 1330,I normally get around 1000 kbps. With my wired connection, I typically get over 3000 kbps.

It all depends on your Sim card and its providers. They should have an app/firmware managing the device (Sim card). If not you can try using Dell standard mobile broadband card utility and see if it works with the card

cheers ...
