Speed Problem: ASUS A3E

Hi!

I have an ASUS A3E laptop, running the Power4gear power management software. However, when set to the maximum performance, the CPU speed ( as shown by right clikcing My Computer) is only 598MhZ when the maximum speed should be 1.7Ghz!!! Other settings in Power4Gear only act to reduce the speed even further! This is with the AC adaptor plugged in too, which allows the user to select "Super performance" from Power4Gear's options.

I have even tried using WinXp's own power management settings (under which you can select the Power4 gear scheme amongst others), and this has no effect!!! The speed has even dropped as low as 200MhZ.

I am at my wits end, can anyone help???

There is nothing fancy about the computer properties i think. It is my sisters laptop and so there hasnt been any mods to the standard setup. I keep thinking its something to do with SpeedStep or whatever they call it these days, and maybe some conflict with the Asus power management and the Windows one.

Is reinstalling the CPU drivers a matter of using the Device Manager options? Ill give it a go! Thanks!
